Bigger not always better, May 25, 2006
This review is from: Olympus H 1 GB xD-Picture Card Flash Memory Card 202032 (Personal Computers)
With this chip, my Stylus 400 takes about 16 seconds to turn on - either to take pictures or to view the chip. Even with the so-called high speed read/write. I take a lot of pictures on the go, and prefer the shorter setup time of the smaller chips.

This review is from: Olympus H 1 GB xD-Picture Card Flash Memory Card 202032 (Personal Computers)
Okay, let me start by saying that I had some serious problems with my card. But I hate reviews that slam the product as a whole because theirs happened to be defective.
We bought this card to take on a 2 week vacation. It was perfect for that purpose. I live with the camera in my face, chasing my kids around and this card did not run out until the last couple of days. I have the Olympus Stylus 810 (8 megapixel). Forgive me for not knowing the exact amount of pictures available, but I will explain that later. I was able to take 725 pictures plus a few short videos. I did notice a slight increase in speed, but not enough that it really made any difference. The more pictures that are stored the slower it gets. A nearly empty card can be pretty fast, but when the card is nearly full it is actually pretty slow. The one thing that this card did offer, that was wonderful, was that I had about 23 minutes of non-stop video available. That is the best aspect of the H card for me. With the other cards (I have some of the old 32MB and 128MB cards) my camera will only allow a couple of minutes of video time.
Okay, that being said...the 1 GB feature was what I was interested in. As I said before, we bought it so we did not have to carry equipment and download our pictures every night while on vacation. Here comes the heartbreak. After we got home we downloaded the...oops I should say we tried to download the pictures to our computer and nothing. Well, not nothing. We lost about 25% of our pictures. There was no indication while using the camera. The first indicator was when I transferred them, to the computer; the thumbnail for several just showed as a white-on-white exclamation point with the word error below. With a few we could see the image on the computer, but when we tried to access the image to print or view it tells me the image is unavailable. When I placed the card back into the camera it tells me it needs to be reformatted (which the camera can do). If I had only a day or two of pictures this would not be a problem, but if you are like me I don't download that often. I have not reformatted the card yet as I am still holding out hope that I can find a way to get to the information, so I can not speak to what will happen with the card or if it will even work again after it is reformatted. I do have to confess that I am still using the older version of Olympus' Camedia 4.3 rather than loading the new software when I got the new camera. However, I doubt this would have affected the card.
All in all. I love the features this card offers to me and the 1GB gives me plenty of storage room for now. But it is only good if it is working. So I guess my review is buyer beware and use the card for a little while before using it for anything important.
Update:
I have an older computer. I have downloaded the images to my husbands newer (2YO) laptop and downloaded fresh drivers for the printer from HPs website and was able to reteive the photographs. I am guessing that the technology in this card might just be too much for my 3ish YO computer. But still can only see, edit, or print the photographs using HP's Image Zone software.

Works great with Olympus SP-350, June 5, 2006
This review is from: Olympus H 1 GB xD-Picture Card Flash Memory Card 202032 (Personal Computers)
Works fine with my new Olympus SP-350. Camera starts up in about same time as with internal memory (very fast, a second or two). It's fantastic to have all this storage available. Price is cheap.
