5.0 out of 5 stars amazing storytelling
I first saw Kenneth Thomasma speak when I was in third grade. He told the story of Om-Kas-Toe, and I imediately decided to buy the book. It is an amazing story about a boys friendship with a crow, and the story of the introduction of horses to Blackfeet culture. I read the entire book in one sitting. Kenneth Thomasma is an amazing story teller.

I thought that this was also a good book. I am going to order some of his other books. Ken Thomasma came to my school awhile ago, and the 4 that I own are autographed. I still enjoy reading them, even though I am 17.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining for children (and good with potato chips), February 8, 2000
I have fond memories of curling up with this book and a few potato chips (yes, potato chips). I think this is a wonderful, educational book for young children - and definitely not your run-of-the-mill school assignment. The way in which the author portrays the Blackfeet life is believable, the characterizations of the twins engaging, and the plotline very entertaining. I read this over and over, even after I had run out of potato chips.

4.0 out of 5 stars Om-Kas-Toe: Blackfeet Twin Capturers and Elkdog, April 28, 2000
By A Customer
Ken Thomasma came to my son's school. We bought a copy of the book so it could be autographed. However, we didn't read the book until several years later. I wished I hadn't waited so long. The story is about Om-Kas-Toe, a young Indian boy, who demostrates his honesty, bravery, and courage as he grows up and becomes a man. The book gives a wonderful insight into the Indian culture and values. My son and I both loved this book. I and I am going to order several other Ken Thomasma books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling story with insight into blackfeet life, August 14, 2007

I read this book to my children over a few weeks and all of us enjoyed it greatly.

This story centers on the adventures of a blackfeet tribe where a woman (Tall Woman) gives birth to twins. Initially it looks as if one of the twins will be left to die, but a tribal decision is made to let their mother keep them both.

We watch the twins grow up and both become a huge benefit to the tribe in various ways. Along the way you learn some of how the blackfeet people lived and how they viewed their world at the time.

I especially liked the descriptions when some of the blackfeet see horses (elkdogs) for the very first time. It really made me imagine what it must have been like to see a horse for the first time ever. And also made me think about things I've seen for the first time that have later made a huge change in my life.

The simple sketches are a nice addition to a story that should be on every child's bookshelf. I highly recommend this book.

This review is from: Om-Kas-Toe: Blackfeet Twin Captures an Elkdog : Autographed (Amazing Indian Children) (Paperback)
There is far too little literature out there for young kids regarding Native Americans. But Kenneth Thomasma is trying to close that gap. Om-kas-toe is a wonderful story which takes place in the 18th century of North West America.

Om-kas-toe has a sister who is his twin and the story deals with the luck the twins bring the Blackfeet tribe. The book has a wonderful cast of characters from a wise raven, a loving mother, an Old Man, and the scary Snake warriors.

This childrens novel is a must read for any child hungering for knowledge of Native Americans.

3.0 out of 5 stars The review of the Blackfeet tribe, November 30, 1999
By
Casey Sherwood (Olympia, Washington, USA) - See all my reviews
In the beginning the Blackfeet tribe is a warlike tribe, but no one ever attacks them. There is a boy named Om who wants to be a brave. He has a twin sister. When a baby falls off a cradle board Om's wise bird finds the baby. Om is the first one there. Everyone thinks Om found the baby so he gets his name changed to Om-kas-toe. His new name means swift as a deer and strong as a moose. In the end he gets his chance to be a brave by leading his braves against the snake braves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful historical fiction of Native American culture., February 27, 1998
By A Customer
This historical fiction, gives just a glimpse into a magically spiritual culture that is often forgotten. Everyday life to Om-kas-toe and his people is full of adventure, and courageous acts. The story can be enjoyed by all ages, and would be an excellent way to introduce any study of Native American literature. I grew up around the Blackfeet people, and after reading the book my respect grew, for this noble and admirable people. In this book, Kenneth Thomasma puts some of the complex and often mystical beliefs of the Blackfeet, on a level that is very understandable.
