5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Soothing, December 30, 2000
By
This review is from: Om - The Reverberation Of Source (Audio CD)
As a yoga teacher, I use this CD at the end of every class during relaxation. It's soothing and repetitive sounds provide the perfect background for a deep relaxation or meditation. I find that it almost has a "Pavlovian" quality; after a few classes, my students' muscles immediately begin to relax as soon as I push play. The ocean-like sounds combined with the permeating sounds of om make this CD is a beautiful yet non- intrusive complement to any meditation or relaxation practice.

2.0 out of 5 stars 30 sec. repeated recording does not make mantra meditation., March 16, 2007

This review is from: Om - The Reverberation Of Source (Audio CD)
"A waste of money" is the best I can say about Charles Cannon's CD: Om - The Reverberation Of Source ASIN: B00004ZCP3. The cover is attractive and uses two of my favorite words that actually have real spiritual and metaphysical meaning; however the audio content of the CD is a misrepresentation of living yoga, in this case Pranayama Om mantra-ing. The problem is not its repetition, since that is what is done when using Om mantra, the problems is its mechanical looping of the exact same recording. It starts out very lovely for about 30 seconds and then proceeds to repeat those exact same 30 seconds over, and over, and over, again for the next 29 to 30 min.; the second half of the CD is the exact same repetitive looping as the first half except about a minute longer.

Given that listeners only get about 30 seconds of continuous mantra-ing, that CD fails to share Charles' personal vibrational relation to humane spiritual source via his mantra-ing. Perhaps he is shy about exposing any significant hints concerning his individual soul's characteristics and private domain to a generic mass audience of untold numbers of which he has never met, and perhaps that is wise, I probably would be shy about that too; The problem is that it also fails as a useful mantra-ing CD in that its repetitive looping is artificial, mechanical, not natural, thus mildly antagonistic to human consciousness (despite the back cover's quasi-scientific gibberish) - that CD takes a lovely 30 second and constrains and subjugates it to a machine looping, thus droning final mix (not to be confused with the droning of musical instruments that must be repeatedly activated by humans, preferably musicians, and therefore vary naturally). So, why is that so important?

Human beings have fluctuations in their breathing, the volume of their vocalizations, the intent of and feelings during Oming all of which are very personal physiologically and karmically; furthermore, human anatomy is governed by the Divine Proportion (as in Sacred Geometry, and Geometry of Life) and each of us anatomically deviate form it somewhat, thus our individuality. In addition, part of our individual spirit is body ejected and re-absorbed biological photons of light whose energy states coincide with the Fibonacci Series which is in turn also governed by the Divine Proportion; personal vibrational relation to humane spiritual sources requires naturally fluctuating mantra-ing. What this amounts to is that 30 seconds of real time recording looped over, and over, and over etc. again is truly mechanical circularity and does not induce nor conduct aesthetically pleasing spirituality in the listener.

At very best such recordings are useful for persons with very chaotic minds (e.g. Psychology clinic patients) to help them at least minimize their mental cacophony.

For relatively normal persons, I don't recommend that CD, nor do I recommend any CD that repeats the exact same little bit of recorded mantra-ing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reviewed by meditation instructor and yoga practitioner, June 12, 2006
This review is from: Om - The Reverberation Of Source (Audio CD)
I am a personal growth coach who teaches meditation in workshop settings. While I have not used this sound track in any of my workshops, I use it myself and have found it helpful in setting the right atmosphere for meditation.

On the CD the sacred sound of OM is chanted repeatedly over the sounds of light instrumental music and the ocean. It is repetitive, which is partly why I think it is successful in inducing a very relaxed state of mind without being a distraction. I also think the natural sound of the ocean helps create a certain deep sense of relaxation as well because it is a natural rhythmic sound.

While I haven't used it in my yoga practice, I suspect it would be excellent for restorative yoga and any relaxation poses at the end of an asana sequence. I know for me it induces a relaxed state and it is one of my favorite CDs to use to quiet my mind. I look forward to trying it with yoga in the future.

While any CD or guided meditation can be a crutch, sometimes a crutch is useful. For beginners in meditation, I recommend it highly to help achieve a relaxed state of mind. However, I think it's also important to learn to achieve a relaxed state without any props.

Part of my work also involves the use of biofeedback. On the back of the CD there are some claims that it induces alpha brain states. While I haven't put this to the test with recording EEG data, I suspect there is some truth to this claim.

With respect to the music, it is not a melody that is developed. Rather the music takes the form of repeated sounds, almost like a chant. Again, this is an approach that is unlikely to distract the mind and conducive to a deeply relaxed state.

I found the price of this CD to be a bit high. However, I have used it many, many times and have never tired of it. Unfortunately, I can't say this for a lot of the other CDs that are out there that claim to be good music for meditation or yoga.

I think you can buy this CD with confidence as long as you understand what you are getting. I hope it bring you the relaxation and proper atmosphere you are looking to create for your meditation practice.
