Book Description

September 4, 2010
Mighty Doberman Omar Blue and his pack of fierce canines end their search and form K-9 Town, USA. With predators always lurking they survive by their fearlessness, love for each other and love for the town that grows ever so quickly. While the Elders and the puppies settle in, there's no end to the adventure. What would make Dirty Sam the Grizzly have second thoughts about attacking the female Elders? Why would Coyote Red think he and his pals could tear down the wedding space even before Rottweiler Brady the professor and Poodle Sophie Jean the schoolmarm have their wedding? What are those naughty puppies up to? If that isn't enough, whose hiding behind The Big Oak Tree now? Omar Blue and his Pack are somewhat mystical so some things are explained by "Thats just how it happens in K-9 Town, USA."

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little book for the Dr. Seuss set April 28, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a fun little book that I would recommend for the Dr Seuss set and for Dog lovers of all ages. Fast read, a real page-turner.

New author Oyln Warfield uses the classic simple rhythm and meter to tell a fun little story of The Great Dobie Omar Blue, who has started a town for dogs.

Of course, like most children's books, each chapter teaches a lesson, but what's nice is that you're not beaten over the head with the lesson. I know many kids now-a-days who are wise to those "moral lesson" books and get rather cynical when there's too much lesson and not enough fun. Here, there is just enough of both. I also had more than a couple of chuckles at some of the antics.

The book is illustrated with simple silhouettes of dogs and small black&white fotos. Here would be my main criticism- it would be far better if it had color illustrations, and lots of them. Kids seem to like color and big pictures. If Mrs. Warfield teamed up with a good childrens book illustrator, this could be the next best seller in that genre.

This would be a great read-aloud book for a parent of a child who loves dogs, or for a younger reader on their own. Or for any young at heart dog lover.

The story starts with a mighty Blue Doberman named Omar Blue, who leads a pack of fifty strong dogs. He's a good leader and has many devoted followers. Realizing the need to settle down to provide structure for the pups, they find a nice spot naming it K-9 Town, USA. They created laws and there were Elders who would provide advice for the town.

After that several dogs in the pack are introduced and different stories follow. There was a K-9 Town wedding, the introduction to the naughty puppies, the female's project and much more. Predators come in and out of the story where the pack joins forces to prevail. But will the pack prevail against Bulldog Jim who disrupts the norm?
There are many adventures that will keep the reader's attention. Each one incorporates some type of lesson of forgiveness, respect, loyalty and love. Children will enjoy a chapter book filled with rhyme. The author did an incredible job accomplishing that goal while telling a story incorporating lessons.

There are many funny parts, like some of the dog's names and some of the stories. Children who love dog stories will enjoy the different way this story is written and told.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Charming, "Feel-Good" Book! May 28, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a delightful book to read aloud to kids. There's a natural rhythm to the text, and it's easy to identify with the different characters. As an older reader, I loved the illustrations, but I think younger readers might prefer some larger, more colorful illustrations. All in all, a very enjoyable read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected December 9, 2010
By Ricky
Format:Paperback
Omar Blue and K-9 Town, USA - I have to say that when I saw the book - slim in size I thought at first it was going to be detailed with facts about dogs, so thankfully it was short and to the point. I never ruffled through the book to get a glimpse of what my eyes were about to enjoy. I took it to my desk and planned to take a sneak peak. After the 3rd page I was hooked. Literally I could not put the book down - the stories are delightful, and I felt like I was right in the middle of action with the K-9's. Darn the phone is ringing - put the book down - great wrong number - back to the stories. Before I knew it I was on chapter 8, and I decided I to stop reading so that I could savor the rest of the book on a slower pace.
The author made this a fun, easy to read book, and the problems presented, along with the way they were solved relate to life - trusting, leadership, teamwork, diversity and so much more. Its a great book for any age bracket. I think each age group will relate to it differently based on their own unique set of challenges.

This book was an easy read for all levels. True dog lovers are certainly able to "see" their own dogs in this pack. I loved it. My granddaughters loved it. And my dogs will be taking up citizenship in K-9 Town with Omar and the rest of the pack. More adventures to come?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good up until the end. August 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a short, quick, and fun little book that I never would have picked up if it weren't for a recommendation by Ms. Kinney, for which I thank her.

Now, I'm not a big fan of poetry so when I first opened my Kindle edition of the book I was a little put off by the sight of poetry instead of the prose I was expecting. But thinking that I had already spent good money and that it wouldn't be fair to just dismiss it outright like that I decided to git it a go regardless. I'm glad I did as the book was very enjoyable to read. The poetry, style of storytelling, and structure of the book reminded me very keenly of old bed time stories. The episodic chapters especially reminded me of the Adventures of Peter Cottontail.

As I'm not very familiar with poetry I don't feel comfortable leveling any criticism or compliment beyond the fact that it was easy to read to follow and that I enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this book to younger readers and older readers that don't mind 'light-hearted-not-serious' reading.

There are, however, some slight issues I had with the books characters themselves, though. First I'll commend them all for being very memorable, helped in large part by to their fun names.

My firs issues is the imagining of the characters. The books shows illustrations and pictures of actual dogs, so that's what I was imagining. Yet there would often be scenes that would challenge this view, like the female elders going shopping or the dogs setting up tables and decorations, that would imply a more anthropomorphic set of characters. I believe a younger read wouldn't have this kind of difficulty though, so it's entirely an issue of personal nitpick and misleading illustrations.
