Book Description

In the dazzling and dangerous land of Marrakesh, globe-trotting scholar Omar Bakhoum joins an airship expedition into the freezing north in search of a fabled country called Ysland, but howling ice storms, legions of ghosts, and a deadly samurai stand in his path.

His journey has barely begun before the members of the expedition team begin dying of a strange and sudden disease, and as the last remaining foreigner on board, Omar is accused of these murders. The one thing that can help him find the real killer is Omar's ancient sword, haunted by the souls of thousands of dead sages and warriors. But this sword may be the very thing that dooms the entire expedition to a watery grave.

Book 3: Wren the Fox Witch

"My one criticism of this book: it was too short...  Lewis' story is well written and fast paced, filled with action and adventure that drives the reader to turn page after page."

5.0 out of 5 stars Airship to disaster December 13, 2011
By Al
Format:Kindle Edition
Let me begin with my one criticism of this book: it was too short. Lewis has built a world that is strangely familiar to us, but wildly different from the world we know. Then he has populated it with vivid characters and powerful imagery that enchants his reader. Bakhoum is seeking to explore a fabled land that lies far to the north, yet is bathed in warmth instead of ice and snow. He signs on to an exploratory expedition aboard the airship, "Frost Finch" seeking his fabled island. But he has secrets and a secret motivation. So do others aboard the ill-fated ship. Those secrets will lead to disaster, but not before they find the fabled land.

Lewis has reimagined our world, but even in the midst of his new vision for our planet, we find the same old human beings with the same conflicts, the same stereotypes and the same greed driven desires. But perhaps there is hope. Bakhoum seems to be different. And Captain Ngozi offers an iconic image of integrity that might offer hope as well. But their world is dangerous and deceit and greed is everywhere. Is integrity enough when not everyone is who they appear to be?

Lewis' story is well written and fast paced, filled with action and adventure that drives the reader to turn page after page. His characters are well developed and well imagined as is the world they occupy. My only complaint with this very good book is that I would have liked more. So if the formula for success is to leave them always wanting more, than I would say this book exceeds expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Lost Airship: A Spoiler-free Review November 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This novella had good characters, action, magic, ghosts, and mystery, all satisfying ingredients in a piece of fiction from which I'm looking for an escape ticket from the real world. My only complaint was that my trip was too short (well, of course, being a novella) but that was a good thing because it means this author's ability to entertain was good and that he left me wanting more.

The characters and the magic cry out for more development and would flesh out nicely in a long steampunk novel, and Lewis's ability to spin a tale on an alternate Earth would please most steampunk fans.

For me, the best part was the author's creative invention of the seireiken blade, a sword made of a magic metal that has a special ability that forms an important part of the plot.

I recommend this novella to anyone wanting to be happily immersed in the world of steampunk mixed with a healthy dose of metallurgic magic.
