Book Description

September 15, 1968
A humorous "drinking biography" of H.L. Mencken. No one who has read more than a paragraph of Mencken's writing could fail to know that he was a connoisseur of beer but it is amazing so many do not know he also had praise for a wide variety of libations. It is fitting that he coined the word (he later admitted it should have been "omnibibulous") which inspired this book when he said: "I'm ombibulous. I drink every known alcoholic drink and enjoy them all."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Any who have been interested in the polite use of alcohol, the American language, or the United States in prohibition days and after, and particularly in H.L. Mencken should give themselves the pleasure of reading this choice bit." (Library Journal) "An amusing book with a bouquet redolent with entertaining quips and anecdotes." (The Baltimore Sun) "A lively, amusing work." (San Francisco Chronicle) "Foam, fumes and fun." (Flint Journal) "A charming literary brew, that will go down well with readers who know--or should know--of Mencken." -- Portland Oregon Journal

About the Author

Bud Johns, the author of four published books and countless magazine articles, was a teenaged newspaper reporter when he first became interested in Mencken in the 1940s. He now lives in San Francisco, about which Mencken once said "I would not have any reputable man think that I was actually sober in San Francisco."
