Product Features

  • Dim your screen beyond device's normal settings
  • Create 5 presets
  • Adjust both backlight brightness and contrast

Product Description

Is your minimum screen brightness still too bright? Dim your screen below what your device normally permits for comfortable use in darker environments, reading in bed, amateur astronomy, etc. Save battery life. No root required.

Save your five favorite brightness and contrast settings as a preset, and get it back by touching a single button or by a Launcher shortcut. ScreenDim also creates a notification item in your status bar so you can easily go back to it to adjust settings.

ScreenDim is the first dimmer that can both adjust backlight brightness below what the system normally permits on many LCD devices and dim the contrast. Some dimmers only lower the contrast, which keeps the black areas unchanged and glowing gray on LCD devices when in the dark, or only change the backlight within the range normally allowed by the OS.

ScreenDim was written and tested especially with the Kindle Fire in mind.

This is the full, paid version of this app. A trial version is also available for testing on your device.

To activate ScreenDim, just tap on the "Active" checkbox and adjust the sliders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just dimming the light 'more' makes all the difference! January 11, 2012

Moving from the Kindle2 to the Kindle Fire has been so much fun. It's my first "Touch" device. What hasn't been fun is still using my Mighty Bright to create backlighting for night reading because the dimmest light-setting on the Fire is still too bright for me. It's been almost two months now that I've been night-reading like this, so today I began searching for ways Kindle Fire users, with eye-sensitivity, are solving this issue.

While searching the web I came across a forum discussing a beta version of an app called ScreenDim. It was so interesting to read the conversation between the designer and the testers with the end result being the app became available for Kindle Fire in January 2012.

So I found it in the Amazon App Store and bought and downloaded my first app. I couldn't wait until tonight to see how it works so I stepped into my darkest closet, was able to reduce the brightness setting below Kindle Fire's lowest, and read comfortably without backlighting.

Thank you to the ScreenDim creator. And thank you to Amazon for recognizing a need for the app and making it available to me. I know a lot of work goes into these technologies, even something so simple as dimming a light, and I really appreciate your efforts on my behalf.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my "most useful" apps! January 11, 2012

ScreenDim allows you to have three nighttime presets and two daytime presets, so you can set the Fire's brightness to whatever you prefer. A great app for those who find the Fire's brightness too bright in a dark room. I literally use this app every single day, and love it.

Great screen dimming app that works wonderfully with the Kindle Fire. Convenient user-defined presets are also a big plus. Makes reading at night a MUCH nicer experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars A five star. March 24, 2013

You only have so much control on a tablets brightness settings. With this app, you can really take it down to, well, a black screen. (I would exercise caution as you set it up, as the lowest setting will make the screen completely dark, then you have to shut down and the restart, and the default brightness will restart) I love to use this with my clock app. I can make the clocks screen comfortably dark but visible, without the grey background on the stock settings -even at its lowest setting- still lighting up the whole room with a glow too bright to sleep comfortably with. Well, with the dimmer app, I can take both background AND graphics down to a battery saving, barely noticeable din. Okay, we've talked about the dim side, but have you ever went out into the bright BRIGHT sunlight and couldn't see the screen very well (even at highest setting?) Well, the dimmer will blaze right past the factory settings; albeit it really draws on the battery, but for a while , or hooked to changer you can read at the beach, or sitting in the sunshine on a nice day...The dimmer comes with five preset options so you can, with the tape of a finger, go to your saved brightness setting. And the set up is not that difficult. Do it once, use it, from then on. And a handy shortcut makes it a snap to turn it off at any time. And tapping your stock brightness setting will also quickly disengage the app....it's one of my favorite apps. I used it every night (or day) I would recommend this app highly....now, some reviews said that the settings will "slip" well, they must be running some kind of software that's interfering because mine has not moved since I set them...its one of my few five star rated apps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Exactly As Described November 25, 2012

One of the really nice things about this app is that in addition to the brightness setting it has a contrast setting. Contrast is important as the maximum contrast does not always equal the best viewing experience.

This app works perfectly, is available in the notification bar, and I have no complaints. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish there was screen blanking February 29, 2012
I'm surprised none of the screen dimming apps like ScreenDim Full have what I would think would be an obvious feature: when I'm using an app like amazon's cloud music player, I would love for an app to blank the screen after N seconds of inactivity, without activating the native screen lock, and would unblank as soon as the screen was touched anywhere. Currently, I lock the screen when listening to music to conserve battery, but then have to enter my password to change tracks or something* - very annoying. Like I said, it seems like an obvious need to me - I'm surprised Amazon itself hasn't addressed this for their own cloud player app, but barring that I'd love for a screen dimmer program like ScreenDim Full to provide that.

* I'm aware you can enable cloud player controls on the locked screen, but that's a very limited subset of the cloud player's functionality.

My favorite app so far (even better than words). I don't have to tilt my kindle fire up to reduce the brightness when reading at night and it's easier for my eyes. A must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a must have for night reading January 4, 2012

This program allows you to set how much brightness comes from your screen, both by using the dimmer and by using what is in essense a neutral density filter. It will go from totally black to 100% brightness. The program also has the ability to set 4 default settings for your favorites. It is always available through the notifications panel.
I can't think how to improve this utility, and keep it running all the time.
