Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Followers of Sears' zone diet probably have a hard enough time balancing their carbohydrate consumption with their protein and fats. Now, if they opt for Sears' latest scheme, the "next generation of the Zone," they're going to have to start gulping fish oil, which contains the all-important omega-3 fatty acids. And not just any fish oil. "High-dose pharmaceutical-grade fish oil" only, and don't think it's easy to get one's hands on this stuff. Only two companies manufacture it; all the others stick to low-grade fish oil. Sears predicts more companies (His own? Just asking.) will get into the high-end fish-oil business once they realize that it can prevent or reverse heart disease, diabetes, neurological disorders, and cancer. Is any of this true? Who knows? In 352 pages, Sears quotes from studies on Eskimos and hypothesizes that modern man separated himself from the apes when he started eating fish, but in the end, readers will need to judge for themselves. (Sears does mention--but discounts--a few potential side effects, including bleeding and increased incidence of strokes.) Bottom line: More than you ever wanted to know about omega-3 fatty acids. Product Description
Enter the Omega Rx Zone!Seven years ago, with his bestselling book The Zone, Dr. Sears alerted the American public to the growing dangers of high-carbohydrate diets and how they were responsible for our current epidemic of obesity. With his simple dietary recommendations for moderate carbohydrate consumption balanced with low-fat protein and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, he has helped millions lose excess body fat, treat heart disease and diabetes, and reverse the aging process.

In The Omega Rx Zone, Dr. Sears greatly expands the potential of the Zone to alter how we think about chronic disease in general -- and in the process allows us to reach our full genetic potential as human beings. Drawing upon his own research as well as recently published studies, he shows how a revolutionary new technological advance in fish oil manufacturing, never before available to the general public, may be the magic bullet that will transform medicine. This new pharmaceutical-grade fish oil offers extraordinary health benefits ranging from helping to treat chronic disease to improving athletic performance and emotional well-being. What makes high-dose fish oil so beneficial? It allows your brain to work at peak efficiency, controlling the hormonal responses that ultimately govern your body and your emotions.

So how is this new generation of fish oil different from yesterday's dreaded cod liver oil? As Dr. Sears explains, the fish oil doled out by our grandmothers and currently sold at health-food stores has never been pure enough to be used in the quantities it takes to feel its potential benefits. The new pharmaceutical -- grade fish oil is more concentrated, free of danerous toxins, and has been clinically tested with spectacular results.

The Omega Rx Zone is a groundbreaking dietary program coupled with guidelines for supplementation using pharmaceutical-grade fish oil that allows us to fine-tune our minds and bodies to reach the full potential of the Zone. With his solid research, practical advice, and infectious enthusiasm, Dr. Sears continues the evolution of his Zone technology that will enable everyone to reach his or her maximum genetic potential for optimal health and vitality for life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Omega 3 Quality, October 17, 2002
By blindbliss (jenkintown, pa) - See all my reviews
I was doubtful about the claims I've heard regarding Omega-3, then after trying everything from meds to therapy for depression and losing hope anything would ever help I decided to learn more about Omega3. I am finally feeling better and am a believer! If you've read Sears book, I found The Omega-3 Connection offered even more mind blowing/informative facts on the effects of eating our now Omega3 depleted food because of all the chemical alterations and genetic enhancements it undergoes and the effects it has on the brain.

The grade, source, manufacturing, and ratio of EPA to DHA make all the difference in quality. I don't believe Dr Sears is simply promoting his product as much as this is a newly pioneered area and like all first productions ... production & quality improve as we learn more about benefits and Sears is trying to convey this important fact and has produced a supplement that is of a purer resource (fish from less poluted areas) & follows a higher standard of production (removes more than required environmental pollutants) to ensure its quality and its effectiveness.

Helpful Hint: Don't be fooled by claims of 250mg - 1200mg per capsule (can simply mean its a bigger pill). To compare the amounts of Omega3 per capsule, you need to find the highest concentrate per capsule (less pills to swallow) by dividing the mg amount of EPA/DHA by the number of capsules per serving. A good source is www.omegabright.com, 90% concentration, virtually tasteless, pharmaceutical grade, and inexpensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Sears reveals the health miracles of high dose Omega 3, August 20, 2002
By A Customer
You may be skeptical, but try the new high dose fish oil and see for yourself life-saving truley remarkable results. With bad genes, resulting in heart disease, diabetes, obesity, gout, chronic rashes, kidney stones, impotance and neuropathy, I thought my life was over. Believe me, my quality of life has improved fifty-fold! The gout is gone. The rashes are gone. Blood sugar is under remarkable control. My HDL which was never more than 32 is now 86. My triglyceride/HDL ratio is now a perfect 1:1. But most importantly for me the impotance and neuropathy are gone and I feel like living again! Thank You Dr. Sears, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, for revealing this miracle.

As a practical matter, the only omega 3 fish oil that is actually stronger than that from Searslabs is called "TwinEpa" from TwinLab. Whereas the SearsLabs capsules contain not less than a total of 600 Mg of Omega 3 (400 Mg of EPA + 200 Mg of DHA) per capsule, the TwinEpa capsules from Twinlab contain not less than a total of 840 Mg of Omega 3 (600 Mg of EPA + 240 Mg of DHA) per capsule.

The potential cost savings per gram of long-chain omega-3 is a whopping 41%, provided you purchase via the internet and buy at the maximum discount.

5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't going to be cheap., May 9, 2002
By A Customer
The author recommends a maintenance dose of 2.5gm of Omega-3's for eicosanoid control. This is to be combined with controlling your insulin by following a Zone diet. Higher doses are required to treat health issues. 5gm to improve cardiovascular health, 10gm for inflammatory pain, and 15gm for depression and neurological conditions.

He recommends pharmaceutical grade fish oil, especially at these higher doses, because of less toxins and less gastric problems. Much of the fish oil you see in stores is only 30% Omega-3's, pharmaceutical grade is at least 60%.

The author has me convinced. However, the oil he recommends is his own from searslabs.com which will cost at least $1.40 per day, $42 per month, just for the maintenance dose. I hope more options for concentrated sources of Omega-3's become available soon.
