Omega 3 Quality,
By
This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
I was doubtful about the claims I've heard regarding Omega-3, then after trying everything from meds to therapy for depression and losing hope anything would ever help I decided to learn more about Omega3. I am finally feeling better and am a believer! If you've read Sears book, I found The Omega-3 Connection offered even more mind blowing/informative facts on the affects of eating our now Omega3 depleted food because of all the chemical alterations and genetic enhancements it undergoes and the affects it has on the brain.
The grade, source, manufacturing, and ratio of EPA to DHA make all the difference in quality. I don't believe Dr Sears is simply promoting his product as much as this is a newly pioneered area and like all first productions ... production & quality improve as we learn more about benefits and Sears is trying to convey this important fact and has produced a supplement that is of a purer resource (fish from less poluted areas) & follows a higher standard of production (removes more than required environmental pollutants) to ensure its quality and its effectiveness. Helpful Hint: Don't be fooled by claims of 250mg - 1200mg per capsule (can simply mean its a bigger pill). To compare the amounts of Omega3 per capsule, you need to find the highest concentrate per capsule (less pills to swallow) by dividing the mg amount of EPA/DHA by the number of capsules per serving. A good source is [...], 90% concentration, virtually tasteless, pharmaceutical grade, and inexpensive. edit 9/10: I'm still an Omega 3 believer but have switched products. Had gotten acid reflux and it started tasting fishy and quit taking for a bit. Acid reflux is gone but stomach is sensitive, so I've switched to Andrew Lessman's line and am very happy. Since entering 40s, I swear its helping with hormones too. I've become allergic to progesterone and symptoms are less when I remember to take fish oil (I double up) and vitamins daily.

You may be skeptical, but try the new high dose fish oil and see for yourself life-saving truley remarkable results. With bad genes, resulting in heart disease, diabetes, obesity, gout, chronic rashes, kidney stones, impotance and neuropathy, I thought my life was over. Believe me, my quality of life has improved fifty-fold! The gout is gone. The rashes are gone. Blood sugar is under remarkable control. My HDL which was never more than 32 is now 86. My triglyceride/HDL ratio is now a perfect 1:1. But most importantly for me the impotance and neuropathy are gone and I feel like living again! Thank You Dr. Sears, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, for revealing this miracle. As a practical matter, the only omega 3 fish oil that is actually stronger than that from Searslabs is called "TwinEpa" from TwinLab. Whereas the SearsLabs capsules contain not less than a total of 600 Mg of Omega 3 (400 Mg of EPA + 200 Mg of DHA) per capsule, the TwinEpa capsules from Twinlab contain not less than a total of 840 Mg of Omega 3 (600 Mg of EPA + 240 Mg of DHA) per capsule. The potential cost savings per gram of long-chain omega-3 is a whopping 41%, provided you purchase via the internet and buy at the maximum discount.

This isn't going to be cheap.,

This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
The author recommends a maintenance dose of 2.5gm of Omega-3's for eicosanoid control. This is to be combined with controlling your insulin by following a Zone diet. Higher doses are required to treat health issues. 5gm to improve cardiovascular health, 10gm for inflammatory pain, and 15gm for depression and neurological conditions. He recommends pharmaceutical grade fish oil, especially at these higher doses, because of less toxins and less gastric problems. Much of the fish oil you see in stores is only 30% Omega-3's, pharmaceutical grade is at least 60%. The author has me convinced. However, the oil he recommends is his own from searslabs.com which will cost at least $1.40 per day, $42 per month, just for the maintenance dose. I hope more options for concentrated sources of Omega-3's become available soon.

Skeptical at first, now I'M A BELIEVER !,

This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
I'm relatively new to all the "Zone Diet" stuff, finding the actual details to be confusing at first even when followed meticulously, but I went ahead and bought this book for many reasons. In it, Barry Sears does, indeed, sound like a snake oil salesman touting "the magical elixer (pharmaceutical grade fish oil) for much that ails you".However, when I actually read the entire book, I found the author to be very convincing. He gives massive amounts of information for all level of readers. I found much of it to be highly readable, though some of it is too scientifically detailed for me. He covers many health concerns in this book, including weight loss, multiple sclerosis and heart disease, to name a few, as well as athletic training and ADHD. I am not a gullible person, by any stretch of the imagination, yet this book convinced me to to give it all a try (secretly at first). I even bought the pharmeceutical grade fish oil, and after 3 months of taking it, I am no longer hiding that fact. I am strongly recommending this book to everyone I know with a health concern covered by this book. UPDATE to this review: Since I've been taking the OmegaRx Zone fish oil (5 months): I would strongly recommend this book. I feel great.

I am a trained weightloss counselor and teach the Zone,
By B. Jacobson (Jupiter, Fl) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
The OmegaRXZone is an excellent source of information on Omega 3 Fish Oil and what it may do to improve your health, both mentally and physically. A tremendous amount of studies on Omega 3 are being done and many more that have been completed. Sear's OmegaRxZone gives you a summary of many of the already completed research projects in simple language that the layman can understand rather than searching through medical articles that usually go way over our heads. The book suggests that large doses of the oil may may improve several major health problems that Americans are suffering with. Taking Omega 3, eating within " Zone " guidelines, a little walking and staying away from partially hydrogenated fats has turned the lives and health of many of my clients around. The book is a sales pitch for Sear's Oil because it is purer than most other company's Omega 3, an important factor as the oceans become more polluted. It is also a pitch for the Zone Nutrition program, which is probably the safest and one of the least restraining weight loss programs out there. As long as the salesman is selling a great product it is worth " the listen. " My only relationship to Sears is that I believe in his program and feel he is doing what he can to get America healthy again. This book is for #1. Nutrition buffs, #2. People who would like to be educated about the good effects that the right combination of foods and Omega 3 can have on your body, #3. Adults with health problems such as Heart Disease, Arthritis, Cancer and Neurological problems.

This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
This is a great book for the lay reader. It introduces one to a set of difficult concepts without ever talking down to you but not requiring you to get a degree in biochemistry before reading it. There is a wealth of references to studies done by major universities around the world which is really appreciated. I started using the Zone Dietary protocols in 1995 when his first book was published, Enter the Zone. It worked just as he said it would. Over the last two years I've strayed and gained about 10 lbs of unwanted body fat. Having recently gotten myself reorganized, I've started again and not only has the fat just melted off, but my BP has lowered. I've also started taking the Omega3 and can tell a difference. There are other books on Omega3 but Sears has a way of dealing with the subject that gives one the sense of talking to a family member about the stars: he's right there and present and witty and smart. I only wish I'd known about Omega3 years ago. It, too, works. And what in this day of endless infomercials is more fascinating than to find something that works just as its promoter says it will??? My only criticism of the book is in the editing and proof reading. The publishers should be horse whipped.

Good Info and also self-serving,

This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
My wife always brought home and tried several different "diet" books. I was (and still am) skeptical of most. Then, coincidentally on the same day I came home from the doctor with a Cholesterol reading of 285, she brought home from work (library) a copy of this book. I read it. First one made some sense in terms of balanced eating lifestyle. In retrospect, I see now it is all his old stuff + High grade fish oil. But for a first timer, it was helpful. There are, as I found out later, plenty of info on Fish oil. But the Balanced, lo-grain diet was most helpful, and avaiulable in the other books. And one can get a good quality Fish oil (Dr. Murrays RX Omega from iherb.com) at a real reasonable price. After being in the ZONE for 4 months and taking Fish Oil, my Total cholesterol dropped to 204! And my weight dropped 25 lbs!

Great Concepts - Opens Your Mind To Healthier Living,

This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
Until I read the first Zone book I was a frequent fast food customer, eating loads and loads of high fat or high carbohydrate foods with no clue that these meals should be "balanced". Prior to reading the book, my idea of a balanced meal was a burger, fries and diet coke. Many of the concepts in the book are a little daunting at first. When I started following the ideas I had charts showing me the exact proportion of fat-carb-protein. Too confusing for my simple mind- I soon switched to Sears' recommendation of using one fist sized portion of protein to two fist-sized portions of favorable carbohydrates. I've begun following his advice on Omega 3, although I most admit that I purchased the cheaper Omega 3 which he sells on his zoneperfect site...and it is significantly more convenient to buy online which eliminates frequent searches of the store shelves. I also love the ZonePerfect bars which can be purchased quite cheaply on sale (and at some of the wholesale clubs). The end result of my focus on diet? 30lb weight loss in about 4 months. This was helped along by a regular exercise plan. I strongly recommend this book even if you only use it as a kicking off point for upgrading your diet.

Best Book Ever on Essential Fats,
By
This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
This is the definitely the best book available on this topic - avoid all others because they aren't any informative than a brochure (I've bought them all).
He presents highly specific information while still not getting too academic. One caveat: you certainly don't have to get his outrageously expensive fish oil products. I get the Natural Factor's Dr. Murray fish oil from either iherb.com, vitaminlife.com, or www.thdv.com. I also get 1/3 of my daily fish oil from puritan's pride (consumerlab.com says they're free of all toxins) In general, he gets a little too paranoid about contaminants. Check out consumerlab.com for acceptable products. Good Luck!

Sears Has Done It Again!,
By Allen J. Bergseth (Two Rivers, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Hardcover)
I am a firm believer in the "The Zone" diet as devised by Barry Sears. With diabetes being prevalent in my family history, I have good reasons to want to limit carbohydrates simply because of its ties to increasing the body's insulin and implications of higher risk for diabetes. Now Barry eloquently points to another very important factor in controlling ones weight and Omega 3 is a key component. He logically proves his theory throughout the book without pulling any punches. The only advice outside the book that I would give is that I found another source for high grade fish oil that is less expensive ...
