5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate
I noticed that 2 people questioned the accuracy of this device. After having a stroke, my life depends on the accuracy of this unit. I test it regularly in my Dr's office (more than 1 Dr too) to make sure-it's always on the money. Easy to use, too-not like many others. I love it.

I have never given anything a one rating. I feel bad doing it, but in this case feel I must. I am a nurse and taking blood pressures is a part of my everday life. I bought this with the idea that I would make it a little easier on my patients, without them having to feel that tight grip around their arm. Well, there is a reason for that tight grip, you get an accurate reading that way. I had all the best intentions in buying this product. But it's readings are just plain inaccurate. If you suffer from hypertension(high blood pressure) this product could be dangerous, as it may not be truelly letting you know that your blood pressure has elevated. It runs way below what a true blood pressure runs. Omron makes great products, I would recommend one of their arm cuff blood pressure machines, you will get a much more accurate reading. Hope it is helpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-Use But Mine Reads Low, November 21, 2005
This review is from: Omron HEM-609 Portable Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with IntelliSense (Health and Beauty)
You velcro this around your wrist, bend your elbow and bring your hand towards your heart until the thing beeps. The monitor begins to take a reading and voilà!

Except. Mine calibrates at a full 20 pts. lower than my doctor's.

This stuff is very easy to use. I bought it to my mother as gift last month. My monther like it very much but she mentioned to me that the measurent is kind of lower compared with measurement in clinic. I am not sure which one is more accurate. that's why I gave it 3 stars.

Because I am overweight, my doctor recommended that I keep track of my blood pressure. Since the cuffs at the automated machines at drug stores and Wal-Mart were always too small for me to get an accurate reading, I purchased this model for ease of use. It's quite convenient. I find myself testing my pressure several times a day. Sometimes just for fun.

It appears to be accurate as well. Some reviewers have claimed that it's readings are low, but I've been getting results consistent with the doctor's readings when he uses the large arm cuff. I've always gotten higher results when I'm at the automated machines with the standard cuff.

I like the memory function as well. It stores 90 readings and will provide and average of your readings as well. This is handy since my pressure fluctuates 10 to 20 points depending on what time of day it is, when I last ate, or how long I've been sedentary. I would recommend this to those of you who need to keep track of your blood pressure but don't want the hassle of an arm cuff.

1.0 out of 5 stars Convenient but inaccurate, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Omron HEM-609 Portable Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with IntelliSense (Health and Beauty)
I purchased this recently. Last week I took it to my doctor's office to compare with the readings that the doctor and nurse obtained with a traditional cuff. We did four or five comparisons, and the wrist BP monitor was not even in the same ballpark. It wasn't consistently high or low, just erratic.

My doctor recommends an arm cuff over any wrist monitor, not just this model.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not accurate, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Omron HEM-609 Portable Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with IntelliSense (Health and Beauty)
The readings are not true.....I made comparison at my doctors office.
The wrist cuff does not capture my elavated blood presure. My doctor
suggested that I continue to use a blood presure cuff.

I've read the reviews that question this product's accuracy, and I don't have any scientific data to argue one way or the other, but to me it seems pretty accurate and consistent with the numbers I get with the arm cuff-rubber tube-hand pump-solenoid wire models. The big difference is convenience; this one doesn't require all that equipment to deal with, and it stores away in a plastic case about a fifth the size of my previous monitor. Because it's so compact, convenient, and easy to use, it stays out on my desk and, therefore, gets used a lot more often. In medical terms, that's got to count for something.

This unit is convenient and easy to use. Unfortunately for Omron convenience is not the figure of merit where blood pressure monitors are concerned. I stupidly trusted this device and it has quite literally impacted my health. In my case it consistantly read 30 too low! Don't use this this device for anything but entertainment!
