When my wife picked this up for me for my birthday, we both thought it was an autobiography of Richard Hammond. His life and times, etc. It isn't. This book is about his jet-car accident and recovery from the resulting brain injury. There is certainly biographical material here. But it exists to establish who Richard is, who his friends are, and how his family came to be prior to his accident. The meat of the book concerns the accident, the near miraculous progression of his recovery, and how it has effected everything and everyone in his life.

The recovery section is really the best part of the book. Both Richard and his wife Mindy take turns telling the story in their own words. Richard describes having brain damage from the inside. Mindy describes his problems from her perspective along with the challenges faced by his family and friends. The initial passages are very Mindy heavy as Richard is largely incapacitated and as his injury has left him unable to recall these events himself. But as his brain heals, Richard tells more and more of his own story. His injury and recovery aren't just described, they are also demonstrated by the presence (or lack) of his narrative voice within his own story. Even if the narrative structure wasn't so clever, the story itself is quite touching and worth reading anyway.

I liked this book a lot. I even gave my copy to my wife and suggested that she read it. While she barely knows who Richard Hammond is and doesn't watch Top Gear, I think she will really relate to Mindy and the kids. Because this is a book about rebuilding a life after a horrible accident and that really could be about anybody, not just a British TV host.

It is a rare thing in today's world that you find a true gentleman adventurer. His story is a great read and yet still very touching. The nice guy you see on Top Gear doesn't seem to be an act, he really is a genuinely nice guy with a beautiful family.

I am a Top Gear fan and once I discovered that Hammond had written a book with his wife about his jet car accident, I was curious to check it out. Keep in mind that I am a very casual reader who rarely sits for more than 20 minutes at a time to read a book. So when I tell you that I finished all 300 pages in two days, that is REALLY saying something.

I simply could not put this book down. Mindy's account of Hammond's recovery left me spellbound and weeping. She has a magnificent and touching writing style that really takes you into the emotion of the moment. The combination of both perspectives (Richard and Mindy) brings a completeness to this story that could not have been achieved otherwise.

Seeing Hammond on Top Gear and then reading this account of his frightening struggle to recover from a brain injury feels like a friend coming to share something private and heartbreaking. I would recommend On the Edge as a must read whether you've ever watched Top Gear before or not.

Fans of Top Gear, the popular British motoring show are familiar with the writing of the various hosts, telling stories and anecdotes about their adventures and to be sure that at the start of “On the edge” as Richard Hammond talks about his early life and love of thrills it seems very much in the same vein. But then it changes.

In 2006 Hammond was involved in a horrific crash that resulted in severe head trauma. It was darn near fatal and took many long months to recover. Up until the accident the book reads like any other set of anecdotes “I put on the racing suit and looked like a bad extra out of Doctor Who” but as Hammond crashes the narrative is taken up by his wife, Mindy and the story goes from a humorous story to something wonderful as she tells of her fears and responses. Fears her husband wouldn’t live, fears that the brain damage might change who he was, fears that he might never be better and how she rose to each challenge. It is less a story about hospitals than of love. The deep love she had for her husband and as he recovers the shared love he sends back, at first not recognizing her as his wife “You’re much too pretty to be someone’s wife” but a glad solid point in a confusing world of a hospital patient, to the wife who stands by him as he admits being terrified of not knowing if he will get better.

If you are married and still in love with your spouse, you will find this touches you deeply. And lets you appreciate that special someone even more. Richard Hammond shares his fears and adventures with the readers and it is fun. Mindy Hammond shares her compassion and love felt through the darkest moments of her life and it is magical. Thank you Mrs. Hammond.

This was one of the better books I've read in a while, not because it's superbly written or some great literary masterpiece, but because it gives the reader something so often lacking in our society today...true, unconditional love. If you're looking for a "story of Richard Hammond's life" kind of book, you'll get some of that here, but for the most part, the story depicts his horrible accident and subsequent recovery. His wife Mindy was there by his side the whole time as he recovered, and is now I suspect. It was her perspective (some of the book is written by her) and her steadfast love and perseverance that I found so endearing. I really liked this book, and would recommend it!
