Editorial Reviews

James Braddell AKA Funki Porcini returns with his 5th album for Ninja Tune, his first since 2002's Fast Asleep. Mixing together surreal jazz, found noise, synthetic strangeness and dream logic. On is as beautiful and odd as anything he has made.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Funki Porcini album I was waiting for! July 5, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I love Funki Porcini... it's one of those music acts from the old school Ninjatune days that you wish would just appear out of nowhere with that signature old school Ninjatune sound.

Lo and behold! Here we have it.

Smooth and funky, with lots of organs, ambient sounds, and of course beats. Much funkier than Fast Asleep but retaining its dark atmosphere, On will appeal to fans of everything from Pelican City to Portishead and from Tipsy to 9 Lazy 9.

It's good. You'll like it. You should get it.

"Excellent record in its own right and very free-flowing like a magical box of goodies that one otherwise wouldn't expect. This is in due part to Braddell's efforts to give a very cinematic, jazzy, and classic British vibe to his songs that them distinct from Thievery Corporation (varied in style) and Tosca (straight-forward electronic jazz). While not a perfect one as this does suffer from a few hints of an empty shadow and some hit-and-miss tracks, it is all a complement to showing off the quirky style and sensibilities of the Porcini at his finest. In some way, it is a love letter to his earlier albums/works but with more Cinematic Orchestra-meets-high-class art film director kind of vibe. Perfect for complementing at an exquisite dinner featuring posh eccentrics waiting to cater in lamb shanks with rosemary garlic sauce and mint sauce, parsnips, and roasted potatoes and then drinks/foods prone to ignite pheromones or have aphrosidiac qualities. Best album of 2010, better than Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP and the rather disappointing Plastic Beach."

BEST SONGS: Belisha Beacon (classy jazz at its finest. Most "Funki"est and richest song in recent years). Moog River (something you'd find on BBC's idents, just bliss). The Magic Hand of Fernardo del Rey (chaotic experimental jazz and swirling distorted/pitched trip). Waking Up (best a tribute to the clever sounds of BBC on teletext)
SIMILAR ARTISTS AND ALBUMS: The Cinematic Orchestra- Everyday and Motion. Miles Davis- B____ Brew. Amon Tobin- Foley Room or Permutation (for the richness in acoustic and electronic experimentation). Biosphere- Substrata, Cirque, and/or Dropsonde. Mocean Worker- Enter the MoWo. Bent- Programmed to Love.
