Editorial Reviews

On Oni Pond, the 2013 album from Philadelphia legends Man Man, features an arresting reconstruction of the band s visionary sound stripped to its core and rebuilt as something new and compelling yet still very much Man Man. An intensive collaboration between the band's frontman, Honus Honus, and drummer Pow Pow, who has assumed a new-found prominence in the songwriting process, On Oni Pond brings an exhilarating array of new rhythmic ideas to the mix. The compositions were further honed by the band members along with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) into a compelling mash-up of Fear Of Music era Talking Heads, classic soul, psychedelia, hip hop, and 50 s rock and roll. With its imaginative yet spare rhythms, huge hooks, and overriding sense of urgency, On Oni Pond melds these seemingly disparate influences into an unexpectedly lush, melodic album, exquisitely consolidated by the band's unique and affecting vision.

Biography

Man Man is a fearlessly unique band from Philadelphia. The group's fifth full length album On Oni Pond features an arresting reconstruction of the group's visionary sound – stripped to its core and rebuilt as something new and compelling yet still very much Man Man. This marked shift is a direct result of an intensive collaboration between the band's frontman, Honus Honus, ... Read more in Amazon's Man Man Store

It has a more refined, pop or electronic sound to it.

There's only one song I don't like on it, which is pretty good!

I'd never heard of Man Man but checked out their single "Head On". I thought it was nice and a little different than normal radio fare but I never expected such a truly incredible album. I actually listened to the whole thing without skipping a single track and I was thoroughly entertained by their variety, experimentation and all-around catchy-ass tunes. I was never bored and I never checked the clock. I'm not sure how to categorize the music, but whatever it is they are amazing at it.

The best way I can think to describe their sound is as a mix of Franz Ferdinand, The Coral and Modest Mouse.

If that sounds like something you'd be into, buy this album!

Despite the handful of reviews I poked through before purchasing this album, (folks being disappointed by a "differerent and boring and less experimental version of Man Man") I made the one-click purchase without a listen and little hesitation. On Oni Pond has kept me captivated unlike any other musicians' ability. The sounds produced here are still difficult to compare with anything out today. What this band has is incredibly unique. Something is truly being missed if you find no experimental qualties here. Sure there aren't as many gutteral screeches of the Primal Man as previous albums but this must be overlooked to see the unrivalled beauty of this very special effort from the one we call Man Man.

I would say Man Man has changed quite a bit from their first CDs. They used to be much more "raw" sounding sometimes and I would say this album is very clean and refreshing even. Not too say some of their typical thematic elements aren't still here. They've always got some lovesick blues going on with some wonderful lyrics to back. I've listened to this CD all the way through at least 5 or 6 times now and have to say some of the songs are down right catchy. Sparks is wonderful, so is King Shiv, and honestly just the entire CD. If you want to listen to something different, and original, I recommend this. And if you're going through a break up, these guys will speak your language. That's not necessary for the enjoyment though. Cheers!

I'm a big fan of Man Man and their strange form of music. It can be near brilliant or it can be discordant and uncomfortable. On Oni Pond hits on the brilliant side of things, and this might be the best album of theirs to introduce new listeners to. Long-time Man Man fans might consider this their "sell-out" album as it tends to be more approachable, but still within that, they managed to hit all the right notes.

This album takes a little to get used to. It's not the raw, sort of gypsy cabaret whirlwind. It has a more refined, pop or electronic sound to it. Once you get passed that and give it a real chance/listen you'll love it. Amazing album!

Every time I listen to it I find a new way to enjoy it. Thought it was a little tame compared to older releases.
