Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Disgraced former CIA agent Court "The Gray Man" Gentry (introduced in 2009's The Gray Man) makes ends meet as an assassin working for clients he cannot trust. Russian arms merchant Sidorenko wants Court to kill Sudan's President Abboud, arguably the man responsible for the genocide in Darfur. The CIA makes a counteroffer: kidnap Abboud and give him to American officials in exchange for amnesty. Court cannot refuse and treks through Sudan in pursuit of nebulous, ever-changing goals. Every element in this book is familiar, but Court is endearing in his perseverance even as his schemes are undermined by sympathetic victims, misleading information, outright lies, poor planning, betrayal, conflicting agendas, and simple bad luck. What could have been a storm of clichés becomes an action-filled yet touching story of a man whose reason has long ago been subsumed by his work ethic.

"On Target" is the second novel in the series featuring ex-CIA operative Court Gentry following 2009's The Gray Man (A Gray Man Novel). It isn't necessary for you to have read that story to enjoy this one, but I think you will most definitely want to read that novel also. This story finds Gentry taking on a job for the Russian mob with a boss who seems to find the hunting and killing aspect of what Gentry does fascinating. Even so, Gregor Ivanovic Sidorenko is perfectly willing to sit on the sidelines and wait while Gentry assassinates the President of Sudan, Bakri Abboud. Sidorenko has a client who wants the President dead because that would open up the availability of a natural resource on Sudanese land which is currently being explored by another super power. Gentry is interested in this assignment because of the decades of genocide carried out by Abboud which could now be stopped. Everything is set and ready to go until Gentry is reunited with his old outfit in the CIA. It seems that the United States has plans of their own for President Abboud. Now there is one target but two plans and Gentry is caught in the middle.

Author Mark Greaney has given us a second book which is about 80 pages longer than The Gray Man novel. The author seems to use many of these added pages to give the reader a fuller insight into Court Gentry, the man. Gentry is shown to be far from an invincible super hero, but very definitely a 36 year old man who is beginning to show some wear and tear around the edges. How can one man remain so alone and so hunted from all sides and not begin to have some problems?

ON TARGET tells the story of Court Gentry, a.k.a. the Gray Man, who four years ago was a CIA operative betrayed by his superiors and forced onto the international lam and into the role of hired gun. Now he has a chance to get back in Langley's good graces, a principal benefit of which is not having to look over his shoulder every other waking moment for hit squads charged with shooting him on sight. All he has to do is spare the maniacal African dictator he's been hired to put out of the world's misery--a job that would pay the Gray Man $4 million--then, against all odds, kidnap the dictator and turn him over to the CIA.

The action begins in Ireland, zooms to Russia, then hurtles through Africa, the breakneck pace never abating, all the while with fine characterization, witty dialogue, breathtaking chase and battle scenes, and as many unforeseen twists and turns as your favorite Robert Ludlum or Vince Flynn novel--combined. Moreover, author Mark Greaney supplies verisimilitude as well as anyone in the writing business, along with singular attention to detail that doesn't merely bring the exotic locales to life: You will taste the sandstorms and feel the bullets whizzing past.

When I flew through Mark Greaney's debut, "The Gray Man," I was instantly impressed! This was one adrenaline pumped thriller that completely knocked my socks off, and I tore into "On Target" immediately afterwards. I had to see what Court, the Gray Man, was up to! I was not disappointed in the least, even if others were.

The Gray Man has an assignment from the Russians, and it involves kidnapping the President of Sudan. What kind of death wish assignment is that? Not one that Court is entirely up to, but his old friends, (or enemies?) The CIA, want him in on this as well. Practically bullied by a past acquaintance, Court reluctantly accepts this mission from Hell. Only Court has no idea how ugly and gruesome this can actually get.

With brains and brawn, Court finds himself in the middle of a mess! And to get out alive would be amazing to him. Who can he trust? Nobody! But this Gray Man does have his contacts, and even though he'd rather eat broken glass, it may be his only choice.

This not only talks about doing the right thing in a tough situation, it also speaks of justifying the means. Doesn't that sound rather simple? I really don't think it is in certain situations. Mark Greaney doesn't shine the brightest of lights for our one-man-band, and the prospects are never the easiest. But he does show a great degree of integrity, while making sure the message is still in your face! Does anybody else have that kind of nerve?

I can't wait for "Ballistic" to get right up in my grill, push me around just a little bit, and hit me with the sucker punch that I never see coming!!! I CAN'T WAIT! Man, this guy is good!

"The Gray Man," despite stretching credulity at points, was a full-speed-ahead thriller unlike anything I've read in years. It followed the mysterious Gray Man, a pay-for-hire assassin, who nonetheless has a code of ethics and a soft spot somewhere deep, deep down beneath his cool, sometimes cruel, exterior. On the run from numerous threats, his story was addictive. The action and pacing were matched by the details about setting and weaponry, making it all flow, allowing me to buy into it. I had a blast reading it.

"On Target" is a different book. Some reviewers seem deeply disappointed by its slower pace, and others seem to appreciate that it's a bit more political and ethical, without relying solely on testosterone. This time around, the Gray Man is sent by the Russians to assassinate the president of Sudan, but this plan is waylaid by a team of CIA killers who strike their own bargain with the Gray Man. Soon, both schemes have gone haywire, as the Gray Man's code of ethics sends him stupidly--by his own judgment--rushing back to remedy a situation he caused. A woman is involved. Plans go out the window. Camels and arrows become part of the overall picture, even as helicopters and belt-fed machine guns take aim along the Red Sea shores.

As in the first book, Greaney gives us some great bits of dialogue, sometimes tough, sometimes thought-provoking, and quite often humorous. He also gives us great action scenes, though they are spread thinner than in his debut. This time around, the Gray Man does get a few moments to rest, but he needs them. If he survived another stretch like the first book, I would begin to doubt this whole thing. Instead, Greaney takes a chance, switches it up a bit, and gives us reason to keep believing that his hero is not invincible.
