Born in 1955, Xu Bing
grew up in Beijing. The artist's work has been shown at a number of museums and galleries worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 2004 Bing was awarded the Wales International Visual Art Prize, Artes Mundi.
Sui Jianguo was born in the northeastern province of Shandong in 1956, and is currently head of the sculpture department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Over the course of his career, Jianguo has moved from pieces made of stone, concrete, and iron to conceptual sculpture, and he has participated in exhibitions in many countries including China, North America, France, Hong Kong, Korea, Spain, Japan, and Australia. In 2005, a retrospective of his work was held at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
Huang Yong Ping was born in 1954 in Xiamen, China, where in the mid-1980s he was a founder of the Xiamen Dada group. They staged radical happenings of which Huang has said, iIn the social politics of China, art is part of ideology. Doubting the nature of art and destroying art is to destroy the political system. If one thinks of art as a metaphor for reality, then to change the attitude towards art means planning to change the way of thinking.i His work, which makes use of Taoism and the I Ching among other Chinese touchstones, is more than cultural criticism; Evelyne Jouanno describes it as ispecific, strategic mediations between his Chinese heritage and the ambient language of Western contemporary art.i Since 1989 Huang has lived in Paris, and in 1999 he represented France at the Venice Biennale. Venues for his solo exhibitions have included the Fondation Cartier in Paris and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.
"Born in 1956 in Wuhan, China, Wang Du now lives and works in Paris. When he arrived in 1990, he was profoundly affected by the constant flow of information that saturates Western life. As an artist, he then took possession of this language to denounce the absurdity of a system where reality is filtered by the media. Through carefully-crafted models and molds, Wang Du gives body to an ephemeral image in order to recreate a space for considering the news. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Fribourg, Lyon, Seoul, Dijon, Geneva, and New York, and at the 1999 Venice Biennale. Wang Du is represented by Deitch Project in New York."
