Book Description

Seventeen year old figure skater Penny Trudeau has secrets. She’s not perfect, as hard as she tries to be. With a mother who is dying and a father who treats her like she’s invisible, Penny has every reason to lie. To escape the life that is spinning out of control, she falls into the arms of an older boy. But when she lies about her age and he finds out the truth, Penny loses the one good thing that has happened in a long time.

Carter McCray is the hockey hunk she falls for, but Carter has his own family drama, and he’s not looking for trouble. Penny proves to be the exception, until the truth comes out and he can’t get past the betrayal—or her father’s threats.

Can Penny find her way back into Carter’s heart, or will she have to face the harsh realities of life on her own? Penny’s choices lead her down a dangerous road and the secrets she’s keeping will change her world forever.

About the Author

PJ Sharon is author of contemporary young adult novels, including HEAVEN IS FOR HEROES, a finalist in the Denver Heart of Romance Molly contest. Her stories have garnered several contest finals, including two awards for ON THIN ICE, and a place in the prestigious Valley Forge Romance writer’s contest for SAVAGE CINDERELLA coming out in the spring of 2012. On the road to publication, PJ decided that indie-publishing was the best fit for her books. Although the themes are mature, evoking plenty of drama and teen angst, PJ writes with a positive outlook and promises a hopefully ever after end to all of her books. She believes in strong heroines empowered by learning valuable life lessons. Because of this, readers of all ages will be captivated by the emotional and romantic journeys of her characters. Writing romantic fiction for the past six years, and following her destiny to write Extraordinary stories of an average teenage life, PJ has been a member of Romance Writers of America since 2007 and is an active member of the Young Adult chapter of RWA. She is mother to two grown sons and lives with her husband and her dog in the Berkshire Hills of Western MA.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good not Great July 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to gather my thoughts before writing this review. I would have given this story a 4 or 5 if it wasn't because of the many devasting issues that the main character had to go through. The concept that less is more, should have applied here. I mean, basically, it felt that the only two things that this poor girl does not go through is going to Iraq and coming back with post-traumatic syndrome and being a Hurricane Katrina victim; because other than that, just about everything happened to her. By the third major incident, it stopped being believable. In my humble opinion, one or two incidents explored in depth would have sufficed.

Also, the interaction between Carter and Penny was so sporadic that I kept wishing for more. I feel that we didn't really get to know Carter very well. The happiness to drama ratio was not balanced for my liking.

Do I regret reading this book? No. It is still a good read, just not epic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touches the Heart of Real Teen Issues December 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I just finished reading On Thin Ice by PJ Sharon and I've been through at least ten tissues. In spite of the tears, the story is uplifting and leaves one with faith in human nature in spite of all our troubles.

Penny is a dedicated honor student, a skater on the competition track, and works part time. As if that isn't enough, she's the main caretaker for her mother who has cancer. Her father has emotionally checked out because of the pain of seeing his wife dying. Reeling against the emotional weight of all she's dealing with, Penny finds comfort in the arms of Carter, a college student she meets at the rink.

Life is complicated, and Penny has other major obstacles to overcome on her path to happiness. PJ Sharon deals with issues of eating disorders, teen pregnancy, and family dynamics in a sensitive and talented manner reminiscent of Judy Blume. Through it all, she infuses the story with hope, faith, and love. This book is a must read for teens and parents of teens. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Buy it. Read it. Love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story Weaver November 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Keep a box of tissues handy. This story will tug all your emotions. While I felt it had too much drama for one character to be realistic, the story is strong and Sharon manages to tie all the conflict together. Too much religious interjection for my personal taste, but did play a part in the protagonist's internal conflict and why she struggled with some tough consequences of her choices. Despite the overwhelming conflict that leaves the reader wondering if the protagonist would ever hit bottom or see the light of day, the lessons learned and advice gently woven through the story makes it a recommended read for teens facing tough life decisions themselves, or through others. Also some great insight for parents who have a tendency to put unfair expectations on their teens. Well done.

More About the Author

Writing "Extraordinary Stories of an Average Teenage Life", I take what I've learned from my own life experiences and create characters and stories about the difficulties of walking that line between being a kid and becoming an adult. I've traveled far to get to this point in life, but I'm a happy, healthy person these days, and want to let teens know that no matter how bad life gets, it can always get better--have hope!

I live in the Berkshires with a dreamy husband, and I've successfully raised two sons who are on their own hero's journey. When I'm not writing and publishing my books, I spend my summers kayaking the lakes and ponds in New England, and my winters snow shoeing in the 6000 acres of woods behind my house...aaahhh, bliss!

Fun facts about me: I have a black belt in karate, sing opera, and can still do a sit spin with the best of them.
