The actual lists of what happened each day are handy, as well as the birthday lists. However, none of what happened is explained - if you want to know more about it you have to go do separate research. Additionally, I didn't care for the religious twist to the book. Each day had different quotes and "spiritual thoughts" which all related to Jesus and God. I didn't buy this book for religious reasons, I bought it for informational trivia.

We thoroughly enjoy "On This Day" and highly recommend it!

We use it nearly every day for our family devotions. We homeschool our three boys, age 10, 8, and 3. The historical timeline and birthdays are always quite interesting. My husband begins by giving us the events one at a time. The children and I try to guess the year in which they took place - LOADS of fun! This sometimes sparks a conversation about history we have learned together in school or how the events impacted the lives of their grandparents or great-grandparents. We do the same for birthdates of the famous people listed for that day.

We recently devised a "point system". If you guess a year EXACTLY, you get one point. The boys want the person with the most points to get an extra desert as a reward. Mom has yet to agree to these terms.

We then read the scripture of the day aloud and the corresponding short story from the book. These stories and quotes are little nuggets of gold! This is no warmed-over milk! There's real meat in this compilation of timely tales. We are able springboard from this devotional to dialogue with our boys about faith, what it means, and how to walk out that faith in their everyday lives.

As I've read through this book over the past several months, I've been struck by the fact that it seems to have an identity crisis. One the one hand, it's a registry of important dates. But it also includes sappy, chicken soup-style anecdotes, which always include a rather obvious life lesson. I think these are supposed to be devotionals.

There's a Bible verse for each day, and the book uses a lot of Christianese language, but there seems to be a lot of alternative philosophical influence as well. One entry reminds us to make lemonade out of lemons, tells us that our thoughts are not God's thoughts, and wraps up with a quote from the great humanist author Aldous Huxley.

"Today's Power Point" concludes each day's entry, and very often they lack both power and a point. For instance, the one for March 7th is a Payne Stewart quote: "I'm proud to pay taxes."

There are a few printing problems with the book, too. For example, April 11th was a blank page in my copy, and part of January 1st was obscured by a streak of white running down the page.

I only purchased this book for use as a historical dates reference, so I don't mind skimming past the fluff. Those seeking Christian inspiration would do much better to skip these feel-good snippets and watered down precepts in favor of something with a little more theological oomph.

Amazon Verified Purchase Two stars is generous. It is over priced.
It contains some good thoughts, but there is a constant theme of "-Love of Money". 1 Timothy 6:10 summarises hundreds of scriptural references by stating that the love of money is actually the root of all evil. The root of all evil is the greatest of all false Gods (see first of the ten commandments). The many good thoughts are, in essence and inappropriately, used to justify the greatest evil. I don't think it is done on purpose. It simply reflects the writers most important personal value.
