Editorial Reviews

"Blank Dogs is a one-man enterprise that within the space of approximately one year has somehow managed to release a dozen or so releases; On Two Sides has previously done the rounds thanks to physical releases on Fuck It Tapes and Troubleman, suggesting this Brooklynite is hanging out in all the right crowds. As for the music itself, it's all very much conceived in a lo-fi dungeon, piling on the no-def fuzz and drum machine beats in a manner that's likely to register favourably on the barometer of hipness. At its best the record delivers wafer-thin new wave jams like "Meltdown Cloud" (like an emaciated Jay Reatard record) or Cure-style pop like "Blaring Speeches," and it's certainly worth your while ploughing through all that grime and distortion to get to all this jagged excitement." I'm surprised no one else has written a review of this album yet, considering how many hardcore Blank Dogs collectors are out there, buying and selling limited edition records for hundreds of dollars despite the fact that you can download many of the songs for free...

Blank Dogs is just a guy, Mike, and his hi-tech home recording studio. Even though he gives interviews where he says he likes talking to journalists and wants the attention, he refuses to give out his last name or have photos of himself published. So, even though he says he doesn't know what the big deal is, he's created a sense of mystery about his identity... which brings me to my main point, everything about Blank Dogs reminds me of the Residents. And as much as I liked the Residents in theory, I couldn't stand their music.

So, let's talk about the music. Imagine all your favorite songs from Captain Sensible, Brian Eno, The Cure, and Wire... now imagine listening to all these songs being played together, one on top of the other. Now add in vocals going through a low-fi, hissy processor. That, to me, sums up Blank Dogs.

According to Mike, his songs all sound like Factory Records reject demos. According to me, his songs sound like 5 reject demos being played at once, which is kinda cool in a short-lived novelty sort of way. But they're all ruined by the hissy vocals. It's not that I don't like to listen to static, it's just that I actually CAN'T listen to this static because it is so harsh and unpleasant.

Ho hum.

I have 2 predictions for the future of Mike. First, he continues to gain in popularity and eventually plays more live shows and gets photographed and identified. If he doesn't take that path, then he'll just be another Bob Log. Second, over time he'll get better at his music and come to find that more impact can be found in a single, well-played note than 50 jumbled up notes added together through the magic of recording technology.

Great album. Excellent songwriting as always. Although this isn't quite as good as their other records that followed, it is very close. The sound and the style is the same. There is some heavy bass and drum going on in many songs that i really love. Other songs sound more lo-fi but still great. Unique.
