5.0 out of 5 stars Elementals: Deep Expositions on Form May 23, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sebastian Currier is a musical explorer of concepts with a wry smile. A student of Milton Babitt and George Perle, a journeyman of violin baroque and guitar rock, he composes brief but well-crafted, clever, and thoughtful sections within grand themes. This album gives us four interesting examples, strongly perfomed by Copland House, a collective that includes composer Derek Bremel on clarinet, Michael Boriskin on piano, Paul Lustig Dunkel, flute, Nicholas Kitchen, violin, and Wilhelmina Smith, cello, with guest artists on harp and additional violins. The first work, Verge, expands on a notion of Robert Schumann and gives us nine very amusing riffs on tempo, style, and mood. For instance, the section "almost too little" is merely 31 seconds long, while its counterpart, "almost too much" clocks in at 3:56. The piece Static is the 2007 Grawemeyer Award winner. It offers six moody studies on the various meanings of static, from electronics to dynamics. Night Time evokes five associations with evening and darkness: tranquility to insomnia, peaceful introspection to anxiety of things that go bump. The last work, Variation on "Time and Time Again" for flute and piano duet, provides four fragmentary and agitated dance studies. The theme itself, a trace of Currier's own ballad, emerges only at the end of the work. Our attention never wavers as we hear each successive piece and subsection; our emotions arise and change. These are intellectual compositions, and repeated listening opens new and deeper appreciation of their many facets. The album is 70 minutes in duration.
