Editorial Reviews

Review

"The precocious, emphatic narration... and escalating back-and-forth between Livi and her mother will enliven any read-aloud. There are plenty of books on the shelf covering kids’ reluctance to get into the bathtub, but Maizes, making an assured debut, and Paraskevas suggest there’s room for one more." – Publisher’s Weekly

"[A] delightful debut from Maizes... Paraskevas’ lively illustrations have a perfect hint of whimsy infused into their colorful displays. His artwork is reminiscent of David Shannon’s in Too Many Toys! (Scholastic, 2008) as he is able to translate the precociousness of childhood into his digitally created art... This is sure to be a crowd-pleaser in story times, classrooms, and laps everywhere. –Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Half Hollow Hills Public Library, Dix Hills, NY, School Library Journal

This is a truly wonderful book for children. The story is amusing but simple enough for the little ones to follow. The artwork is bright, vivid and colorful. Most of all, it truly captures the voice of the little girl trying desperately to avoid getting in the bath and her mother losing her patience. It would make for a wonderful present any munchkin would enjoy, boy or girl.

"On My Way To The Bath" is a witty, creative kids book which is beautifully illustrated and will having your kids say, "read it again!" A very fun, inspired read full of hilarious adventures as Livi makes her way (slowly) to the "boring" bath.

I wish I would have had Sarah Maizes book, On My Way to the Bath, fifteen years ago! What a delight to read and enjoy. Kids will be enchanted with the story and illustrations, and I'm sure it will make getting into the bath easier.

On My Way to the Bath will feed the imagination of young story listeners while providing some truly funny moments that are sure to liven up any story time program. Mom tells Livi that it's time to take a bath, but Livi declares that baths are boring and proceeds to take her own sweet time, pretending that she's everything from a snake slithering off the couch to a rock star singing along with her sister's music. Livi's pretend moments are delivered with lots of humor, and they make a perfect counterpoint to her mom's ever increasing frustration. Practice this one a couple of times to get the timing down right and you will be well rewarded with lots of laughs from both parents and kids. The final page is a perfect ending that continues with the imaginative theme and will leave parents shaking their heads and kids pretending to be sharks.

The bold, charming illustrations only add to the enjoyment of this fantastic read aloud tale, and kids will take special note when Livi morphs into a snake and later a tiger on just a few of her many pre-bath adventures. This was a big hit with the preschool story time crowd, and I imagine it will have special resonance for those kids who fight against that bath time boredom. Recommended.

On My Way to the Bath by Sarah Maizes and Illustrated by Michael Paraskevas is a fun, delightful, tale. I remember well the days when my boys were younger that bath time was a battle and the path to the bathtub a long meandering trail.

Here is a synopsis:

The way to the bath is a long journey fraught with obstacles only a young child could imagine. On her way to bath she must battle a snake, rule the world, and climb a mountain all while her mother waits with the bubbles ready. With delay tactics as imaginative as this, it's a wonder this feisty little girl ever makes it all the way to the bath.

Book Thoughts:

The author has created an endearing character, with a big imagination. The illustrations by Michael Paraskevas (known for his work with Maggie and the Ferocious Beast) are bright and colorful and add a fun, whimsical, quality to the story. This would be a great story at bedtime for parents and children to share a fun at the end of the day.

This is a truly fun and charming book.

Though there are many times that if i was this little girl's mommy, I'd be laying down the law for this much "dawdling," there are many other times that we use imaginative play to get things done...(like hopping like a frog to put our coat away, or cleaning up all the legoes before the firetruck toy runs them over). in that sense this book is such a good reminder to have fun along with our little imagination machines.

I had bought my grandson Sarah Maizes "On My Way To Bed," and he loved it. This book was also a hit with him. Lizzie's imagination is a wonder to behold.

My five year old grandson and I love this book. It is witty and imaginative book that bears up well under multiple readings. It speaks to the heart of a free spirited child whose plans and ideas are often in opposition to the parents. And there is even a fitting and surprising ending.
