3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Dr. Laurence Raw on December 24, 2012
Format: Kindle Edition
In this delightful series of essays, Michael Holroyd looks at his life through association with cars: beginning with his childhood, when he used to sit in his aunt's car and listen to an old gramophone, and ending with recent years, when he has significantly cut down the number of miles he clocks up each year. In between there are some very funny tales about his experiences taking a driving test, and helping his wife Margaret Drabble to learn to drive. Holroyd's reminiscences are interspersed with anecdotes about other authors and their driving exploits, including Bernard Shaw, Lytton Strachey, and Virginia Woolf - all of them subjects of Holroyd's own biographies. A highly readable bedside book for anyone who still believes driving can be a romantic as well as a practical pursuit.
