Book Description

In Tremeirchson, a barn leader’s children are expected to follow their parents into the sky, becoming riders of the magnificent winged horses that are the medieval Welsh village’s legacy. Neither Emma nor Davyd, however, want to follow that tradition.

Sixteen-year-old Emma risks losing her family by following her heart. Eager to take her place in the air, she longs to ride a forbidden winged colt born in barn of her father’s biggest rival. She also dreams of the rival’s sons, not sure which she truly loves. Bold and exciting, Evan will someday lead his father’s barn. Davyd is quieter, more dependable, with an ability to get things done. Her father disapproves of both boys and pushes her toward an ambitious newcomer. He also insists she ride the colt he’s picked for her.

Davyd, also sixteen, is plagued with a secret—he is afraid of heights. Refusing to become a rider means public humiliation, his parents’ disappointment, and lifelong ridicule from his brother, Evan. He reluctantly prepares to join his family aloft in the Aerial Games that provide the entire village with its livelihood and tries desperately to think of an alternative.

As Tremeirchson’s barns prepare for the Rider Ceremony, winged horses suddenly start dying. Shocked, the adults hesitate, mired in tradition and politics. Is it a disease or poison? Accidental or purposeful? Someone must discover the answer and act before all the winged horses in the world are gone forever.

Praise for On a Wing and a Dare:

“Love or power—strength or control. These are traits that drive the teens of Tremeirchson down paths that either bless or corrupt them. On a Wing and a Dare is beautifully written and visually captivating with winged horses adding to the enchantment.” —Susan Stec, author of The Grateful Undead series

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots to Love about this Book! July 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I truly enjoyed this fantasy book about winged horses and the riders who love them. How totally awesome would it be to gallop with your horse as it picks up speed, unfolds and lifts his wings and takes to the sky? Wow, this is the stuff dreams are made of, and the author describes it well. But this story has lots for everyone: there's a great love triangle between Emma and two brothers from a rival barn, each who she loves in a different way. Then there's the horse she loves, also not from her family's barn, and she feels like she must do anything to stay with this young horse. Top this with Aerial games on horseback, horses suddenly dying and a mystery to solve, family intrigue and boys finding their place in the world, and the Welsh dialect throughout. Lots to love about this book, and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Settting, Poigant Tale July 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A mysterious disease attacks flying horses (oh yes!) in a Welsh town, where the economy depends on the activities surrounding these magnificent beasts. Relocate to a new settlement with hope for a bright future, or stay in a place where the prospect might be bleak; that's the decision the folks in the town of Tremeirchson have to make.

PLAYERS:
Emma: A young rider who is torn between responsibility to her family and her attraction to two brothers from a competing barn.

Davyd: The brother who longs for Emma's attention, but the one least likely to win her.

Evan: The rider in his family and likely successor, as head of the family barn.

I liked the concept of flying horses. Call me limited in the reading department, but apart from the legend of Pegasus, I haven't read any work of fiction recently that contains these creatures. The writer did a nice job of putting me in the Welsh village she created and giving flight to these horses.

Though the main characters are young, they display a level of maturity that is in keeping with the time frame of the novel.

The story was poignant in parts because of the death of the horses, the passing of one family member and the town that had to be left behind. The writer does well in conveying the emotions of the characters and putting the reader inside their situation.

COVER NOTE: I think a picture of the Welsh countryside described in the book, along with an actual picture of a horse (wings and all) would do this book a LOT more justice.

OVERALL COMMENTS: I'm a girl who has both feet firmly planted on the ground when it comes to reading material, so flying horses are way out there in terms of a storyline.

However, Linda Ulleseit does well in painting a beautiful setting, along with an interesting and varied cast of characters. At times, I had to consciously separate grooms/riders/stewards in my mind, however, the main players are always distinct.

The writer also pays keen attention to the setting, ensuring that the technology, food and living conditions are in keeping with the era. I like the addition of Welsh terms, which adds to the authenticity of the story.

The mystery was well played and the truth convincing when it unfolded. It left me with the thought that many times, people do things with one aim in mind, but the consequences explode beyond expectation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Story - Beautifully written July 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It didn't take long to become totally immersed in this engaging story. I especially enjoyed the love triangle between Emma, Davyd and Evan. I felt Davyd's pain when he realized he was in love with his brother's girlfriend, and struggled with Emma when she was confused as to which brother she truly loved. When they all grouped together to save the flying horses from extinction, I was just as confused as to what she should do and who was best for her. I could envision that first kiss, those flying horses, and the beautiful landscape. It was easy to relate to the confusions and tough decisions that life and love brought to Emma, Davyd and Evan, as well as those around them. On a Wing and a Dare is beautifully written and a great read for all ages. Kudos to the author, Linda Ulleseit!
