In French there's a genre of fake writing that encourages us slowly to discover it's really an imposture. This is one of them, though the pleasures of discovering the joke are somehow compromised by the American publisher's cover description of it as "a novel." Too bad. Why give away the game? The surprise of discovery is just a part of its hoard of literary riches. It begins for instance with what purports to be a high-scholar's critical account of the "diaries'" 'Roman original, its Renaissance editio princeps and so on. The impression will only become undone little by little. With the "diary" proper you feel the extraordinary beauty of accounts that succeed in alienating you from whatever expectations you might have had about what a "period piece" or costume drama is supposed to sound like. You only slowly come to realize that this supposed historical diary is a hoax (which is a recognized as an authentic genre in France): apparently written by a great patrician woman, owner of great land-parcels and enormous numbers of peasants. Among other beautiful accounts in her "jottings": Apronenia's recollections of group-conversations (a la Cicero, a la Greek dialogs) which produce witty banter as well as real philosophy--though in the process showing up certain conversational casualties among her friends. Also, there're scabrous sex scenes that she has with throw-away boyfriends, or her moving, tender account of relations with a life-long lover--and his death. There are recurring lLists of debts of gold, due at the next Kalends, indicating that this wealthy woman probably, despite her enormous riches, is surely beginning, like many of us, to live beyond her means.Read more ›
