4.0 out of 5 stars Indeed a war novel. October 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The writer has a wonderful skill with words, painting a picture so well, that you could almost taste the bad whiskey. And the plot is fairly interesting as well, delving into war with grit and determination.

well worth the read, however I gave it only four stars, because it seemed slightly rushed, as in the book overall could have used a little more polishing.

So So story. So So characters. So So everything. Not recommended by this audience of one. If this was a series of novels I wouldn't bother with the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Agendas of War September 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
ON THE RIVERSIDE OF PROMISE is a striking action/adventure novel of war, family, and trust. Ethan Whittmore is a Royal Marine send into a war zone to train groups of advance scouts. He drinks too much and is far from home, but his tour is almost over until he hears that his brother, a doctor working with the Red Cross, has been ambushed.
He asks a friend to help him get into the jungle to rescue his brother.
He finds his brother's wife after a brutal ambush and together they set out to find Andy Whittmore. Ambition, betrayal, and vengeance are the hallmark of the twisted plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eloquent portrayal of hope during war July 9, 2013
By K.B.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"On the Riverside of Promise" is a war novel of a very rare quality: amidst the brutality of war and senseless carnage, it also provides a sense of hope and inspires those that are caught up in this story. Author Vasileios Kalampakas has created a riveting story of suspense, as Captain Ethan Whittmore searches the Nigerian jungle in search of his brother during a bloody civil war. It is the clear the author has done extensive research on this war. The Nigerian Civil War is not something that most people have heard about, and for the most part it has been neglected in the history books and through mainstream media. It was estimated that up to 3 million people died during the conflict, but ironically not from the actual fighting itself, but from the hunger and disease that followed. The backdrop of this tragedy is never shied away from by the author, and with every glimmer of hope for our protagonist, we are still reminded of the horror of war that surrounds him at every turn. This is a book of tremendous power and importance and is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale that will creep up on you before you know it February 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Set against the bloody backdrop of the Nigerian Civil War, English Marine Ethan Whittmore is faced with an opportunity to find his estranged brother Andy and fulfill a childhood pledge to his pastor that he would never leave Andy behind. This is an ultimate tale of faith, hope, the search for truth, the ties that bind, and perfidy. The gruesomeness of war is overshadowed by the hideousness of man. Unaware of his own search for redemption, Ethan repeatedly questions others about their beliefs about God. To add more complexity, there is a nonstop barrage of twists and turns that spin your brain until you find yourself questioning who to trust and just how much more this soldier can take. It is packed full of action, and for the first time ever I found myself reading a book and saying to myself, "I can actually see Jason Statham and Russell Crowe starring in the movie version of this!" A thrillingly complex novel full of surprises from one page to the next; you might just need a glass of Littlemill yourself.

More About the Author

Well, I'm an alright guy according to what the people around me tell me, but I rarely trust them so your mileage may vary. Other than that, I like to write fantasy and science fiction, most of the time mixing and matching them in weird amounts.

I really like writing short stories. Some of those I like to turn into novels. Perhaps you might like one of them, one day.

If you find the photo confusing, I have to make it clear that I'm not really a magical bunny - it's just that I share in the superstition that photos take away your soul.
