This album has always been one of my old reliables. It is really a sweet, melodic, and soulful set of songs. Jesse's version of the ecology is my favorite that I've heard. I also like the song about "have you seen the sunlight shining on her hair? And feel her warm mouth on you in the summer air?" Very romantic and a little bit jazzy. Good stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars the other Young February 7, 2007
Format:Audio CD
'On the Road' is one of Jesse Colin Young's finest, and Jesse Colin Young is one of the best of a slew of talented folk-rock (with a dash of jazz thrown in) artists who emerged out of California in the late 1960's. The tracks are drawn from at least five different concerts at five different venues in predictable places such as Seattle, Portland, and Reno, Young's preferred stomping grounds. The recording is vibrant and Young is at the peak of his popularity for his solo career (his prior stint with The Youngbloods produced, arguably, as much if not more quality material). The selections feature a mix of Young's better compositions (although more, and even some better numbers could have been chosen... who's to say whether Young intended this live disc to also serve as a 'best of' production?), and a handful of well-chosen covers.

'On the Road' opens with 'Sunlight', a signature JCY track, which is greeted with applause from its opening strains. A lilting flute surrounds Young's dreamy, memorable vocals lines, culminating in the chorus with the familiar "that's the way she feels about you..." Other signature tracks include 'Miss Hesitation', at 6:25 one of three numbers that glean nearly half of the running time on this fifty minute collection. Young tips his hat that this is a tongue-in-cheek composition by introducing it with "What a wonderful world this would be... if all my sexual fantasies came true..." The lyrics prod 'Miss Hesitation' into suggestive rhymes such as "quiet conversation" and "sweet sensations", among other delights. The centerpiece of the disc finds itself right of center, opening on track eight with a three minute exposition of rising and falling crescendos, before settling into the funky lead guitar of 'Ridgetop'.

I have owned this album since it was first issued on vinyl in 1975. Since then I have owned several hundred albums, 8-tracks, cassettes and CD's. Without a doubt this is still my favorite album of all time. There is not one bad track on the entire album. This album is the perfect blend of voice and instrumental harmonies, blues, jazz and rock. It is sultry, it is sweet, it is sensual. The music is clean and simple. It speaks a message of peace, love and just having a good time. In some ways it is prophetic. It is a great retrospective of the music of the early to mid 1970's. This is probably one of the most overlooked albums of of its type of all time. Too bad it is out of print. Every serious audiophile should have this one in their library. Everyone else should own it for sheer listening pleasure

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer listening pleasure January 13, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is a great live album, an exciting rock offering with distinct jazz and blues overtones, in places heartfelt, in others sheer exuberant fun. You get the feeling that the band are really enjoying themselves here, and the standard of musicianship is impeccable. This album has very much benefited from tasteful remastering, capturing the bright, warm feel which really makes you wish you'd been at this gig.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remembering it after 30 years August 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My husband happened to say something tonight in a romantic moment that triggered a distant memory of this album...and I've spent most of the night hunting it down. I had this album in vinyl, and it was lost a few moves time ago. Wonderful songs, and an outstanding live performance, which is all too rare.

So glad I remembered it again!
