don't buy this lock ! PLEASE READ, July 27, 2010
This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
As previous posters I thought this lock was close to indestructible- at least with conventional bolt cutters. I was dead wrong. My scooter was stolen and they had what seems to be the biggest bold cutters that you can find available to the general public (not construction grade).
In addition to the fact that the chain was cut like butter with these bolt cutters, the "limited anti-theft program offer" is not honored by the OnGuard company. The broken link was left at the scene, the lock was registered, the paper work was filed out accurately within the "15 days of purchase" window, and all other conditions were met (ie fine print). OnGuard is now rescinding their warranty!!!
If you have a scooter, or a high value bike- PLEASE think twice before purchasing this lock!!
(I am still fighting this, and if it changes, will update this post)

I tested it myself and it passed., December 21, 2007
This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
I was bought a 5019LP recently, and was curious about how strong this chain really is - so I decided to test it for myself. I figured that it was worth losing a link of length to know if it's as strong as they claim. Yes, I'm an enginerd.
I took the 5019LP to a nearby hardware store and grabbed the largest bolt cutters I could find (a 36", $50 unit). I found a quiet aisle and put the final link (the regular link end, not the big link) in the jaws, braced one handle of the bolt cutters against the floor and then started whaling on the other handle. I threw all my weight against it, bounced up and down on the handle, tried some different positions on the chain and in the jaws, but the chain did not cut. There was only a minor indentation on the link (<0.5mm): the blades of the bolt cutters were actually dented worse. (Sorry hardware store!)
So I conclude that it really is made from hardened high strength steel. I've done this kind of test before on conventional hardware store chain of similar diameter, and those chains were indented much more. Speaking of diameter, note that the links are 10mm in width, NOT 12mm like Amazon says. I just measured 'em.
So I am confident that this chain will stop the neighbourhood punk with typical bolt cutters (the ones I tested with were the top size in the in-store range and cost $50). If he has really nice bolt cutters he might cut the 5019, but such cutters aren't even available where I live. (There are some online for $140 that are rated to cut up to 14mm chain, which is too heavy to carry). If he uses a hacksaw he'll probably get through eventually, but he'll be there for a LONG time. I haven't tried the freeze and smash trick, but I imagine that it'd be hard to brace the chain well enough to transmit a good enough shock to it. And if he shows up with an oxy-acetylene torch, a plasma cutter, or industrial hydraulic cutters, he'll get through ANY chain.
I believe that this chain offers excellent security and decent portability. At 8 pounds (including the lock) (3.6kg) it's a bit heavy, but not too bad for a bike. It's like carrying a laptop with a charger. Thicker chains are too heavy for my security needs.

Monster Lock, June 18, 2011
This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
I was wanting a lock that was serious to secure bikes that I carry on a hitch rack to the hitch itself, since all the cable locks made for bike racks suck and take a thief less than thirty seconds to get through the best ones. Thought about getting the "beast" version of this make, but it must be huge as it weighs 20lbs.
Ok get in your mind how large you think this one is and now double it and there you go. Its a monster. Can it be beaten. Yes it can, if you have a power grinder that you can plug in with a diamond blade you can cut through this in five to eight minutes (guy tried this on youtube to test it I found). So when they fire up the grinder in the middle of the night waking the dead, you can go get your antique muzzle loading rifle off of the wall. Fill it with powder, tamp down the powder, put in a 50cal lead or steel ball, wadd it down so it doesnt fall out in case you are shooting down from an upstairs window in your home, take aim and shoot the jackass in the jackass, and still have a few minutes to spare before he gets through it. Bolt cutters of any kind wont touch it. Who knows if the company will stand behind that guarantee to replace your bike, but if they get it they worked for it. Most thieves are just too lazy and move on. Serious visual deterent too. The lock part is larger than a big mans fist, no kidding.
