4.0 out of 5 stars I tested it myself and it passed.
I was bought a 5019LP recently, and was curious about how strong this chain really is - so I decided to test it for myself. I figured that it was worth losing a link of length to know if it's as strong as they claim. Yes, I'm an enginerd.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy this lock ! PLEASE READ, July 27, 2010
This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
As previous posters I thought this lock was close to indestructible- at least with conventional bolt cutters. I was dead wrong. My scooter was stolen and they had what seems to be the biggest bold cutters that you can find available to the general public (not construction grade).
In addition to the fact that the chain was cut like butter with these bolt cutters, the "limited anti-theft program offer" is not honored by the OnGuard company. The broken link was left at the scene, the lock was registered, the paper work was filed out accurately within the "15 days of purchase" window, and all other conditions were met (ie fine print). OnGuard is now rescinding their warranty!!!

If you have a scooter, or a high value bike- PLEASE think twice before purchasing this lock!!

(I am still fighting this, and if it changes, will update this post)

I was bought a 5019LP recently, and was curious about how strong this chain really is - so I decided to test it for myself. I figured that it was worth losing a link of length to know if it's as strong as they claim. Yes, I'm an enginerd.

I took the 5019LP to a nearby hardware store and grabbed the largest bolt cutters I could find (a 36", $50 unit). I found a quiet aisle and put the final link (the regular link end, not the big link) in the jaws, braced one handle of the bolt cutters against the floor and then started whaling on the other handle. I threw all my weight against it, bounced up and down on the handle, tried some different positions on the chain and in the jaws, but the chain did not cut. There was only a minor indentation on the link (<0.5mm): the blades of the bolt cutters were actually dented worse. (Sorry hardware store!)

So I conclude that it really is made from hardened high strength steel. I've done this kind of test before on conventional hardware store chain of similar diameter, and those chains were indented much more. Speaking of diameter, note that the links are 10mm in width, NOT 12mm like Amazon says. I just measured 'em.

So I am confident that this chain will stop the neighbourhood punk with typical bolt cutters (the ones I tested with were the top size in the in-store range and cost $50). If he has really nice bolt cutters he might cut the 5019, but such cutters aren't even available where I live. (There are some online for $140 that are rated to cut up to 14mm chain, which is too heavy to carry). If he uses a hacksaw he'll probably get through eventually, but he'll be there for a LONG time. I haven't tried the freeze and smash trick, but I imagine that it'd be hard to brace the chain well enough to transmit a good enough shock to it. And if he shows up with an oxy-acetylene torch, a plasma cutter, or industrial hydraulic cutters, he'll get through ANY chain.

I believe that this chain offers excellent security and decent portability. At 8 pounds (including the lock) (3.6kg) it's a bit heavy, but not too bad for a bike. It's like carrying a laptop with a charger. Thicker chains are too heavy for my security needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monster Lock, June 18, 2011
This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
I was wanting a lock that was serious to secure bikes that I carry on a hitch rack to the hitch itself, since all the cable locks made for bike racks suck and take a thief less than thirty seconds to get through the best ones. Thought about getting the "beast" version of this make, but it must be huge as it weighs 20lbs.
Ok get in your mind how large you think this one is and now double it and there you go. Its a monster. Can it be beaten. Yes it can, if you have a power grinder that you can plug in with a diamond blade you can cut through this in five to eight minutes (guy tried this on youtube to test it I found). So when they fire up the grinder in the middle of the night waking the dead, you can go get your antique muzzle loading rifle off of the wall. Fill it with powder, tamp down the powder, put in a 50cal lead or steel ball, wadd it down so it doesnt fall out in case you are shooting down from an upstairs window in your home, take aim and shoot the jackass in the jackass, and still have a few minutes to spare before he gets through it. Bolt cutters of any kind wont touch it. Who knows if the company will stand behind that guarantee to replace your bike, but if they get it they worked for it. Most thieves are just too lazy and move on. Serious visual deterent too. The lock part is larger than a big mans fist, no kidding.

4.0 out of 5 stars really heavy duty chain and lock, be prepared for a little weight., October 6, 2010

having recently been the victim of bike theft i researched the best lock for my needs. cable locks are out, easiest security to breach. u-locks and heavy chains are the way to go and kryptonite/onguard/abus are the best companies for it. i chose a chain over a u-lock because i prefer to wrap a chain around my seat post than to have a u-lock bracketed to my frame. this chain is a beast and weighs 8 lbs., but if you wrap it around your seat post while riding the weight is distributed beneath you and doesn't affect balance too much. this chain also has theft insurance, which you have to register and pay for but it's worth it if you own a quality bike. the noose of this chain is a plus because it allows you to make the chain real snug which prevents thieves from using leverage to pop the chain or lock. I'm not saying that this chain is the best or strongest, but if theives see this and other bikes around you have lesser security then they'll most likely move on to easier prey. Also, common sense is needed when locking your bike up. well lit, heavily trafficked areas are a must for locking location... security cameras/guards are not a deterrent for theives. if you can, quick release your front tire and chain it with the back tire and frame and get a chain/cable to keep your seat to your bike or take your seat with you. take care and happy riding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stops scooter thieves, April 25, 2009

This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
I own two scooters, a nicer new scooter that was locked with the OnGuard "Mastiff" 5019LP and an older scooter that was locked with the Kryptonite "Barbed Wire".

One fine evening some bike and scooter thieves came to my neighborhood bike rack. In addition to stealing 3 other nice bicycles, the thieves cut straight through the Kryptonite cable and tried to hotwire my older scooter.

They couldn't get the new scooter though! There were a couple of pathetic looking scratches on the Mastiff chain, but it was pretty clear that your run of the mill scooter thief won't get the goods if you've got this chain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lies, May 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

So I received my chain lock and found that the chain has square links instead of the hexagonal shown in the photo and on the Onguard site. The Onguard material attached to the chain lock also states that this is supposed to be a hexagonal link. I then measured the links to find that they are 8 mm across rather than the 10 mm from the attached material and the Onguard site. The u-lock at the bottom is stamped 5019LP and attached material does have a valid barcode and UPC. Either Onguard made this with the wrong chain or someone changed the chain before it was sent out. Either way I am beyond disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vendor tried to dupe me, November 2, 2006
This review is from: OnGuard Mastiff 5019LP Bicycle Chain Lock (Sports)
I purchased this item and the vendor mailed me the much less expensive item instead of the heavy-duty lock I had selected. Like I wouldn't notice the difference?
