"Ms. Lee combines horror, eroticism and violence in one heady concoction that has me wanting more."
--MrsGiggles.com
"A delicious walk to the really dark and wild side. If you think the current trend of romantic urban fantasy is too sanitized ... vampires who won't drink blood & werewolves who won't eat meat, take a look at this one." --MrsGiggles.com
"Lee beautifully explores the dual-sided nature of Alexa's existence as a werewolf." --Bitten By Books

I picked up this book because it was free on Kindle, not really expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised! I liked the fresh take on the urban/paranormal vampire romance so much that I also bought the second book in the series. The power bond concept between Arys and Alexa is really interesting and I'm looking forward to find out where it leads them next. I wasn't crazy about the love triangle, I normally don't go for books where the heroine is involved with multiple guys. While it seemed to work for this book, I'm hoping in book 2 Alexa ends up making a choice between Shaz and Arys. I would also recommend getting the novella Huntress (Alexa O'Brien Huntress Prequel Short) before reading this one.
First, I liked and read Anita Blake until it became too pornographic and no story. Before I read Once Bitten I read both prequels, Stunner and Huntress, currently all three are free. The writing in the prequels was hard edged, hard whiskey drinking, tough Alpha female werewolf. I have no clue what happened in the book. Now Alexa barely drinks and just complains about her old attraction and her new. Her fighting comes off second rate. And when she watched Arys kill the woman in the alley when they, Vamps, do not have to kill to survive... it is just that if they do not kill it is like having sex without an orgasm. And add in that she is supposed to be taking down those that risk Their existance... not standing there going hohum I like watching this. At that point I knew it was not for me.
This book is about Alexa, who happens to be a werewolf with special powers. There are 2 novella's that come before this story that give some background on Alexa, Arys and Raoul. They are not needed but give you insight to the relationships described in this story. Alexa is one of those characters where the more you read about her, the more you understand her personality. She has depth and extreme loyalty. With her profession, you wouldn't expect that, but she does surprise you. Alexa has a magical pull towards Arys who is a vampire. Neither of them understands the pull but in one night they become bound to each other until death. Arys character is that of a typical bachelor and womanizer. When he interacts with Alexa you see a different side of him that I think will grow in the next books. Alexa also has Shaz wanting her attention, who is one of her pack mates. He is the good guy that Alexa needs and wants but the bond with Arys might just kill any chance of them being together. Raoul is the alpha of their pack who just so happens to be framed for murder. Raoul is crazy. His actions and emotions are all over the place. I think that the novella might clear up any questions about him. I think if I had read the novella I might have felt more over the ending with Raoul.
