This review is from: Once Bitten, Twice Bitten: The Singles 1981-1995 (Audio CD)
The Exponents are a New Zealand pop rock band from the 80s and 90s, and here in New Zealand basically their music is a favourite for people to get drunk to. Everybody knows their singalong kiwiana classics like Victoria, Why Does Love Do This To Me?, Whatever Happened to Tracy? and others. It's not rocket science but its fun to listen to and they're well crafted songs. The compilation starts strongly with the classic Victoria which strongly evokes the New Zealand of the early 80s, followed by another great pop tune Airway Spies. All I Can Do is maddeningly catchy but in a good way. The fifth song is alright but not that memorable but is followed by another pop classic I'll Say Goodbye (Even Tho' Im Blue). Basically another great singalong pop tune. After the groove based Sex and Agriculture which is pretty good one of their best songs Christchurch (In Cashel Street I Wait) follows. This isn't their most well known song but is powered by a great melody and has a buoyant and poignant feel. Again it evokes the New Zealand of the 80s and evokes Christchurch very strongly too. From there it ticks along nicely until some of their best known songs are featured like Why Does Love Do This To Me?, Whatever Happened to Tracy? and Who Loves Who The Most?,beer drinking classics. The Exponents music isn't rocket science but its well written and has its place, especially when downing some ale with friends.
