Book Description

A duchess in time saves a noble line …

In theory, the Duke of Candover is the most eligible peer in the realm. But in truth, he has a deep aversion to the merest hint of marriage, not to mention two botched engagements which have marked his jaded soul. Now, after a debauched bachelor party that causes public outcry, the Prince Regent is demanding that it's Candover's turn to be brought to heel. And Prinny secretly believes that Isabelle Tremont, the Duchess of March, is precisely the lady up to the challenge.

Isabelle must marry, but a day of reckoning with the man she's loved for years is her greatest fear. If Candover insists she's too young and innocent for a seasoned world-weary man like him, there's no shortage of other candidates. Gentlemen of prestige and position. Gentlemen whose attentions are driving Candover to jealous distraction. Yet one abandoned moment under the stars hints that if they can put aside pride and duty, then a love once denied might just be their destiny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Questions answered and Love succeeds! May 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Isabelle Tremont, Duchess of March, is a Duchess in her own right due to the death of her father not having had any male heirs. She is eighteen and has taken on the many responsibilities of the fifth largest duchy in the country with intelligence, courage, determination and a strong sense of duty. For someone so young she has many things about the world figured out; the biggest that passion is a rare gift that takes courage to embrace, it completes your life and everyone deserves it! She always has a bright and cheerful disposition and outlook on life despite feeling rejected by her mother, who abandoned her and her father, and her father for being disappointed that she was a girl not a boy.

James Fitzroy, Duke of Candover is 31 and struggles with always doing the right thing. He was a friend of Isabelle’s father and had great faith in her ability to do her father proud. He has no desire to marry and sees it as a duty to the duchy, but one that he is not in a rush to fulfill. He would rather be out in the world exploring and discovering new things, not responsible for the many people that he is.
After James rejects Isabelle she takes things into her own hands and sparks jealousy and possessiveness in James. They are good together and for each other, but James keeps throwing up barriers. Isabelle’s feisty attitude is charming and has me cheering for her. The grace that Isabelle exhibits for one so young is heartwarming! Once James decides to put aside a deathbed promise he comes through with one heart-melting grand gesture that leaves no room for second guessing where he stands.

Calliope, Isabelle’s cousin-companion is priceless. She is outspoken, stubborn and has a sense of humor. She adds giggles and keeps James on his toes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Expectations of 5 stars not met May 28, 2014
By Danker
Format:Kindle Edition
I ordered Sophia Nash' latest instalment months ago and have for recent weeks checked and rechecked and rechecked the Amazon site, eagerly awaiting its release.
I've enjoyed this series. Of course its premise is ludicrous, if only because it is impossible to believe that the Regent, with his disgusting and disloyal history, would ever wax sentimental about marriage. (After all, he left the wife he secretly married to support their family financially, while he squandered money right left and centre. And then he married and immediately derided his foreign wife - making his mistress, Lady Jersey, her main attendant, isolating her in her new country, poking fun in front of others about her alleged lack of hygiene and encouraging his Court to emulate his cruelty.) If he did, however, ever make such utterances about the importance of marriage, it is yet more proof of his egregious hypocrisy.
Moreover, there was not such a collection of young, attractive bachelor Dukes all available for matchmaking at the time in which these stories are set.
These factors should make the series a definite no-no for me. But, somehow they haven't!
Instead, I have happily suspeneded disbelief to be swept along by this series. That has been made easier because of Nash' deft touch with humour. For this reason, my favourite story has been the one about the Duke and the long term curse and his artist h (and after reading this tale, it still is).
I always expected the Candover story would be less amusing, because he has been the ducal group's Sobersides (as described by Calliope) since Day 1.
And so it proves to be. Indeed, the story of James and Isabella is far from amusing. Candover is carrying serious guilt, crippling secrets and the burdens of promises made to his father and Isabella's father.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4-1/2* Loved this! June 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
James, the Duke of Candover is the Premier duke of the realm; also one of the wealthiest; handsomest; and it must be said the biggest stick in the mud ever! Duty, duty, duty! At the deathbed of his beloved god-father, more father to him than his own, he was asked to make sure his god-father’s beloved only daughter, now a Duchess in her own right would be seen to and protected. To be sure, she should marry appropriately - a man no more than a few years older than she, so that she would never have to care for an aged old man.

Since she was a child, Isabelle Tremont, the Duchess of March has always been in love with the Duke of Candover. During her father’s last days, Candover had brought great peace and solace to her father. Isabelle was more than grateful for his devotion to her father in his last days, which was why when Prinny made it known that he wanted his Entourage of unwed dukes and yes, even Isabelle, an unwed Duchess to go forth and propagate (so to speak) she would do as she was bid! Actually, Prinny was sure that Isabelle and James would make a splendid match! However, pride, duty, and a death-bed promise would keep James apart from the one woman he could not have – who is the only one who he knew he would ever truly love.

*** The one thing I am so sorry for after reading THE ONCE AND FUTURE DUCHESS, is that it is the last book of the Entourage series. Obviously, from reading book #4, I can only surmise how much enjoyment I have missed by not having discovered this series long before the last book. Truly, there are no excuses, as I am fully aware of Ms. Nash’s excellence in telling a historical tale, complete with fascinating characters, terrific plots, and lovely sensualness.
