Book Description

June 2002

It was in Paris she first saw him. He was tall, handsome--utterly dangerous. Inexplicably drawn to him, Brianne Martin pulled a grief-stricken Pierce Hutton back from the depths of despair. He was forever grateful, but he drew the line at seducing a woman half his age.

It was in Paris she fell in love. Although Pierce was strictly off-limits, Brianne couldn't imagine surrendering her innocence to anyone but him. Certainly not to her stepfather's corrupt business associate. Obsessed with Brianne since their first meeting, this man would stop at nothing in his relentless pursuit of her, including masterminding a marriage to merge their powerful families. All seemed lost, until Pierce passionately saved Brianne's life...as she'd once saved his.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A casual flirtation between an 18-year-old girl and a wealthy man twice her age leads to love and danger in this engaging but not entirely plausible thriller by popular romance author Palmer (The Rawhide Man). Brianne Martin's nefarious wheeler-dealer of a stepfather sends her to study in Paris, where she falls for widowed oilman Pierce Hutton. In the process of Pierce trying to protect Brianne from his undercover activities and Brianne trying to seduce Pierce, they both get caught up in Middle Eastern shenanigans that might?if Pierce and his allies didn't turn out to have near-superhero abilities?lead to WWIII. This is definitely thriller-lite (the supposedly tough-guy hero refers to "a hush-hush mission"), however, and Palmer manages to fracture her few French phrases (for example, femme du nuit instead of de la nuit). The dialogue is charming, the characters likable and the sex sizzling, and the roller-coaster emotions between hero and heroine will give Palmer's many fans an enjoyable ride.

Review

Young Brianne Martin first meets a grief stricken Pierce Hutton in Paris, and unknowingly saves his life. Despite the differences in their ages, Pierce is determined to stand as a friend to the young Brianne in repayment of her service to him. Pierce has no idea that Brianne's young heart has decided to place its affections on him. However, Brianne is wise enough to let Pierce get through his grieving for his late wife before making her interest to Pierce known. They meet again, two years later at a time when Brianne is in dire need of help to get away from a suitor her stepfather is determined she marry. Pierce agrees to help shield her from the unscrupulous advances of Philippe Sabon, and quickly finds that there is more going on between Sabon and Brianne's stepfather than just matchmaking. Brianne and Pierce are drawn into a volatile situation which could have dire international catastrophe written all over it. This was a nice departure from the usual Diana Palmer style. This time she gives us a hero who isn't a misogynist. He is still tortured but he is a man capable of deep and everlasting love, and a man who has touched and lost a love. Palmer's heroine is of her usual mold. Spunky, witty, bold, and willing to open herself up to be hurt in order to win her man. The only problem I had with this story, was the fact that Pierce would suddenly waver from being resolved to leave Brianne alone and the next minute give in and then beat up on himself for doing so. Had this only occurred once it would have been acceptable, however, it happened more than once and you got the sense that Pierce was not exactly firm in his convictions. But this wasn't much of a deterrent to the story, and over all I enjoyed Ms. Palmer's story and agree that it is an entertaining book for those who are Palmer fans. Once In Paris makes one wish they could experience the romance and beauty of the city for themselves! Ms. Palmer again gifts her readers with a hero who is capable of great love and sensitivity. She makes us all long for our own man to lavish our attention and love upon! Diana Palmer never fails to stir the senses with her strong-willed men, witty women, and explosive story lines. And Once In Paris is no exception to this rule! Gloria Lower -- Copyright © 100198 Literary Times, Inc. 4.0 out of 5 stars I was tired of doormats..., June 29, 1999
By A Customer
I liked the book, especially the fact that the heroine, Brianne, wasn't a doormat like a lot of the "virginal young girls" that romance writers seem to like. She not only held her own but was several paces ahead of the hero! I also liked the fact that the hero, Pierce, wasn't a macho womanizer like those same writers are so fond of. You didn't get the feeling that he thought she was supposed to get down on her knees, eternally greatfull, that he paid the slightest attention to her. And I liked that he was faithfull - even if it was to his dead wife - he showed potential. And lived up to it!

But I especially like the fact that Ms. Palmer included characters from a previous book: "Tate Winthrop" and "Cecily." If I'm not mistaken, they were first introduced in "After Midnight" written under the name of "Susan Kyle." I was intrigued by the glimpses of these two and had wondered what happened to them. Too bad I have to wait until December for the release of "Paper Rose" for their full story!

I've always loved cross-over stories. Speaking of which, does anyone know if there was a book about Brianne's friend "Cara Harvey"? Since she was mentioned several times in this book, with references to her problems with a "gentleman," I was wondering if she had a separate story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something just was'nt right, June 15, 2000

Love Diana Palmer and I enjoyed Paper Rose so I went out and bought this one. I thought that it was a little to long. All the ingredients were there for a great romance but I just couldn't feel the emotion like in many other Diana Plamer books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too hot to handle!!, December 29, 1998
By A Customer
I liked the way that Diana Palmer wrote Once In Paris. I love all of her books. This was the BEST one yet. She really out did herself when she wrote Once In Paris. The way she made all of the characters and plots blend together was outstanding. Her description of Pierce and Briannes secret feelings was great. The romance and passion in this book was the greatest. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. I read it in under 2 days! I really recomend this adventurous romance novel to any Diana Palmer fan and to any other romance reader.
