Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of high-sea adventures will enjoy Grant's debut time-travel romance. Grant's background as a U.S. Air Force pilot brings authenticity to her heroine, Carly Callahan, who ejects into the sea 1,200 miles off the coast of Spain after her plane malfunctions. When she is rescued, she finds herself in the early 1800s. Her savior is pirate Andrew Spencer, who mistakes her for Lady Amanda Paxton--his intended kidnap victim in a plan for exacting revenge against the man who destroyed his family. While not strictly accurate, Grant's descriptions of life on the high seas give a taste of the buccaneer's life, good and bad. Carly's assimilation into the 19th century is evocatively portrayed, as are the strong chemistry between the two and Andrew's reluctant acceptance of Carly's true identity. The subplot of those trying to retrieve "Lady Amanda" ties in with the drama in the opening gambit: Will Carly return to the future, and, if she does, what will happen to her and Andrew's love? Grant's novel creates a satisfying ending that, with a little suspension of disbelief, holds up to scrutiny. (Feb)

5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY AWESOME! WONDERFUL!, March 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
ONCE A PIRATE was such a refreshing change from the run of the mill time travel books! Susan Grant was able to transport me into the story and make me believe I was actually on the ship with Carly and Andrew. This was a light-hearted romp through time, and I enjoyed the concept of a woman fighter pilot ending up on a Pirate ship - completely out of her element, yet able to cope. Ms. Grant has a way of writing that made me smell the salty sea air and feel the salt spray on my face - and feel Carly and Andrew's emotions. The ending was such a complete surprise that it left me shaking my head in wonderment. As an author, she is a combination of Deb Stover and Sandra Hill, but has her own unique way of telling a story. I can hardly wait to read other books by her. She should go far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, April 22, 2000
This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best time-travel stories I have read. I found the means by which Carly travels thru time much more realistic than the usual amulet or spell. She was a very independent and modern woman, and that made for some very funny situations with Andrew. Our hero is ALL pirate! My only disappointment was how long it took them to get together after Andrew realized Carly was not Amanda. The end of this book is terrific, and has a unique resolution to the story. If you like time-travel, this is a wonderful one. KCS

4.0 out of 5 stars An Attention Grabber From The Beginning!, March 4, 2003
This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
This story had me hooked from the first page and held me captivated until the very end!

Lt. Carly Callahan is a Navy Fighter Pilot whose plane goes down in the Atlantic during a thunderstorm. She awakens in the water and finds herself being pulled onto a ship that looks like it has been painstakingly restored. This ship comes complete with pirates and a Captain who's just about the biggest hunk that she has ever seen.

Captain Andrew Spencer has been planning on the best way to payback an old nemesis and that is too steal his betrothed right out from under him so to speak. He hears a faint cry for help over the side of his ship and pulls Carly out of the ocean , only problem is he thinks that she is Amanda. The girl that he plans to ransom. Once Carly starts talking Andrew now feels that he has been duped. The poor girl is clearly not in her right mind she keeps asking for Ray Dio (radio) and keeps talking about flying machines! Yeah right--the girl is addled.

Andrew and Carly despite everything start feeling things for each other that would be best ignored. Carly has her own past that has followed her back into history, and Andrew is coping with the guilt over the death of his mother and brother. Where neither felt that anyone could love them they find a love more precious then anything that they have ever experienced--but is it strong enough to last through time?

This was a fast paced page turner. Both Carly and Andrew were wonderful characters and I loved reading about them falling in love. This book offers plenty of chuckles what with the word confusion of a modern day girl thrust into the early 1800's. This was a great way to pass an afternoon.
