TOTALLY AWESOME! WONDERFUL!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
ONCE A PIRATE was such a refreshing change from the run of the mill time travel books! Susan Grant was able to transport me into the story and make me believe I was actually on the ship with Carly and Andrew. This was a light-hearted romp through time, and I enjoyed the concept of a woman fighter pilot ending up on a Pirate ship - completely out of her element, yet able to cope. Ms. Grant has a way of writing that made me smell the salty sea air and feel the salt spray on my face - and feel Carly and Andrew's emotions. The ending was such a complete surprise that it left me shaking my head in wonderment. As an author, she is a combination of Deb Stover and Sandra Hill, but has her own unique way of telling a story. I can hardly wait to read other books by her. She should go far.

This is one of the best time-travel stories I have read. I found the means by which Carly travels thru time much more realistic than the usual amulet or spell. She was a very independent and modern woman, and that made for some very funny situations with Andrew. Our hero is ALL pirate! My only disappointment was how long it took them to get together after Andrew realized Carly was not Amanda. The end of this book is terrific, and has a unique resolution to the story. If you like time-travel, this is a wonderful one. KCS

An Attention Grabber From The Beginning!,

This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
This story had me hooked from the first page and held me captivated until the very end!Lt. Carly Callahan is a Navy Fighter Pilot whose plane goes down in the Atlantic during a thunderstorm. She awakens in the water and finds herself being pulled onto a ship that looks like it has been painstakingly restored. This ship comes complete with pirates and a Captain who's just about the biggest hunk that she has ever seen. Captain Andrew Spencer has been planning on the best way to payback an old nemesis and that is too steal his betrothed right out from under him so to speak. He hears a faint cry for help over the side of his ship and pulls Carly out of the ocean , only problem is he thinks that she is Amanda. The girl that he plans to ransom. Once Carly starts talking Andrew now feels that he has been duped. The poor girl is clearly not in her right mind she keeps asking for Ray Dio (radio) and keeps talking about flying machines! Yeah right--the girl is addled. Andrew and Carly despite everything start feeling things for each other that would be best ignored. Carly has her own past that has followed her back into history, and Andrew is coping with the guilt over the death of his mother and brother. Where neither felt that anyone could love them they find a love more precious then anything that they have ever experienced--but is it strong enough to last through time? This was a fast paced page turner. Both Carly and Andrew were wonderful characters and I loved reading about them falling in love. This book offers plenty of chuckles what with the word confusion of a modern day girl thrust into the early 1800's. This was a great way to pass an afternoon.

Oh, man! I couldn't wait to read this book after hearing so many wonderful things about it from on-line readers' groups. Wow, am I ever tickled it was everthing people were raving about. A strong, modern day heroine. A hunky pirate hero who meets his match. I could practically smell the sea brine as I read this tale. Well worth the price! I'll definately read more by this author.

The best in time travel romance,
This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
Part of a jet fighter squadron flying towards the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, experienced Navy pilot Lieutenant Carly Callahan struggled with a nasty storm. Things turn worse when her radar fails and the twin engines of her F018C fighter flame out next. Forced to bail out into the icy Atlantic, Carly soon observes wooden ships in battle. Sir Andrew Spencer and his pirates pluck Carly out of the sea. Andrew believes he has captured Lady Amanda Paxton, the fiancee of his enemy, the Duke of Westbridge, even if she fails to fit the description he has of her. Carly insists she is a US navy officer, but Andrew rejects her nonsense as gibberish even as he cannot understand who is "O.K." and "Ray Dio". When Carly sees a newspaper dated 1821 and other evidence, she concludes that somehow she landed in the past. As they sail to obtain her ransom, Andrew and Carly fall in love, but the obstinate Adonis not only distrusts that emotion, he cannot accept that she is from a future that allows a woman to fly in combat. ONCE A PIRATE is an enjoyable time travel romance due to the reactions of the lead characters to one another and their situation as Carly's survival training is tested. Still, the plot belongs to both lead characters, as they struggle with her displacement and their love for one another. Susan Grant casts quite a spell on her audience with this superb debut novel that will have sub-genre fans seeking her newer work, the recently released THE STAR KING. Harriet Klausner

Great romance novel. Plausible plot and fast paced storyline. Heroine is spunky, but not overly so. Hero is perfect, but not too perfect as to be unbelievable. I really, really loved this book and I am very, very picky. I could not put the book down...finished it in one day. Had humor, romance (not porn), and suspense. What more can I say?

Restored my faith in time travel romance!,

Once a Pirate is the best romance I have read this year. From the opening chapter to the final page, I was sucked into the world of Carly and Andrew. Susan Grant's debut has restored my faith in time travel romance. But what struck me the most out of all the wonderful elements was the ending. Lately, I have felt that I have been reading the same ending in every time travel romance. Of course they're all happy ones, but the characters get to that happy ending in the exact same manner. What Grant has done is different, and I found it very refreshing. Susan Grant has a bright future ahead of her, and I hope she can write fast.

I'm a fan of a well-written time-travel romance, and this did not disappoint. The characters were well-drawn, with real emotions. It was easy to fall in love with both Carly and Andrew--and to root for them when all seemed lost. The ending was a surprise--and a thrill. I will definitely shelve this one on my "keeper shelf." I look forward to reading Ms. Grant's next book, THE STAR KING.

A book you won't be able to put down...,
This review is from: Once A Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
Lieutenant Carly Callahan had always loved to fly. When flying over the Atlantic Ocean, she encounters a storm and has to eject from her jet. She is rescued almost at once by a man who reminded her of a nineteenth century pirate. Everything from his clothes to his ship tell her that she made the incredible feat of traveling through time. As her panic increases, so does her desire for her captor, whom she feels she has known and loved. If this isn't enough for her to handle, Andrew believes that she is Lady Amanda, his Duke cousin's betrothed. With plans to ransom her for revenge, Carly has six weeks to convince him that she's not who he thinks she is.Sir Andrew Spencer has suffered at the hands of his father's family. With thoughts of revenge, Andrew takes Amanda captive. He didn't plan on the pull he felt toward her, nor the dreams that he can't stop having. In every dream he is trying to save the woman he loves, but is unable to help her. He has dreams of metal and helicopters, something that doesn't even exsist in his time. Over the course of their journey, Andrew finally excepts the awesome possibility that Carly came to him from the twentieth century. This is a great book with where emotions run high. Grant portrays Carly and Andrew who are solemates in many lives. I couldn't put it down and read it in less than one day! |
