More About the Author

Daniel Z. Marsh served as a Marine in the Pacific Theater in World War Two. He joined the Corps right after Pearl Harbor, and soon after basic training volunteered to be a Marine Raider.

The Raiders were four specially trained and equipped battalions that lead the way in war against Japan. Dan became part of the 4th battalion as it was created, commanded by Jimmy Roosevelt, one of FDR's sons.

Dan fought in the New Georgia Campaign, then the Raider were disbanded and he became part of the 4th Marine Regiment and fought on Guam, and as part of the 6th Marine Division fought on Okinawa.

All this and more is detailed in his book, "Once A Raider..."

After the war Dan met the love of his life Florence, married her and had 3 children and 3 grandchildren. He returned to the Corps and fought for a year in Korea, at the Chosin Reservoir and other campaigns become coming home.

In 1998 with the help of his son Louie, Dan wrote this history and put it on his website, Dan Marsh's Marine Raider Page. It was the first site on the internet to be devoted solely to the Raiders.

He died suddenly in 2008, and is missed by all who knew him.

Louie has put this material together in book form to expand the readership and preserve his father's legacy.
