An abrupt ending.
Sierra B.
It has a huge collection of classic fairytales, some well known and some more obscure but all well written and beautifully illustrated.

We picked this up for our son in a grocery store of all place and it has been a wonderful reading treasure.

This is prettily illustrated, but the fairy tales are the MOST dumbed-down versions I've ever read. Rapunzel jumps out of the tower window into the prince's arms, and they ride off back to her parents? Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother was just hiding in the bushes? Vasilissa's father was just traveling? Hansel and Gretel went into the forest of their own accord? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Those people who think dumbing things down for kids is the right thing to do will like this volume... until their kids hear the real versions elsewhere, anyway.

A family member got this for us as part of a baby shower gift and it is hands down our favorite fairytale book out of the several we have gotten and the many more we have looked at. It has a huge collection of classic fairytales, some well known and some more obscure but all well written and beautifully illustrated. Every page has large well done pictures that help enhance the stories. The only problem we have had with this book, is because it has so many tales it is pretty heavy and the padded cover makes it stick out a tiny bit so when we accidently dropped it on the floor one day the front cover ripped up the seam. Not a huge issue but just be careful not to drop it.

The stories included in this are: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Nightingale, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Three Golden Flowers, George and the Dragon, The Princess and the Pea, the Selfish Giant, The Ugly Duckling, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Vasilissa and the Magic Doll, Beauty and the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin, Three Little Pigs, Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Little Dutch Boy, The Wild Swans, Snow White, The Frog Prince, The Elves and Shoemaker, The Goose Girl, The Flying Prince, Thumbelina, and The Little Mermaid.

Sadly many of the stories are abridged edited and/or outright bowdlerized from the originals. All the more of a pity considering the fact that the illustrations in this volume are quite superb and well done, it's a beautifully put together book with wonderful art. The stories however, stray from the source material quite often whether in the name of political correctness or a desire to simply make things simple and happier for children. It's not bad, but I'd highly recommend getting your hands on the originals if you're interested in the stories for yourself, and not just kids.

Beautiful illistrations and a number of stories I had not heard before. I love this book for what it brings to families.

I should have heeded my instinct when I read the one-star review by another buyer. The stories are truly truncated and watered-down beyond belief. I even find myself thinking at one point, please don't let this be the end of the story, and it was. An abrupt ending.

Although a beautiful padded cover book with gilded edges and a ribbon marker, the illustrations (by various illustrators) don't really appeal to me, and don't fill me with anticipation about reading the stories to my daughter, or poring over the pictures together, but then again, she probably wouldn't mind looking at them.

In fact, this book has now set me on a quest to find the original fairy tales collected and written by the Grimms Brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault to share with my daughter and to relive my own childhood memories.
