PreSchool-Grade 3-For preschool and early elementary school children, bedtime is synonymous with storytime. In the book Once Upon a Bedtime Story (Boyds Mills, 1997), award-winning author Jane Yolen infuses both familiar and lesser-known classic bedtime stories with stylish, contemporary flair. This recording features 11 stories from the book read by the author. The selection of stories draws from all over the globe, and includes favorites such as "The Three Little Pigs" and "Stone Soup," and appealing but lesser-know stories like "Talk," an Ashanti tale, and "The Monkey and the Crocodile," from India. Yolen reads the stories, and her expressive and relaxing voice is well-suited to these bedtime stories. Short musical introductions set the mood for each story. The country sources for the stories are identified at the beginning of each selection, as well as on the case. Light and appropriate sound effects paired with Yolen's impeccable storytelling skills create a listening experience which enhances the original book.

About the Author
Jane Yolen has authored over 200 books, many of them for children. She was called "America's Hans Christian Anderson" by Newsweek. Her books, poems, and stories have won many awards, including: the Caldecott Medal, two Nebula Awards, the Rhysling, an Asimov's Magazine Reader's Poll award, World Fantasy Award, a National Book Award nomination, three Mythopoeic Awards, the Golden Kite Award, the Skylark Award, Jewish Book Award, the Christopher Medal, the Association of Jewish Libraries Award, the Charlotte Award, the Garden State Award, the Golden Sower Award and others.
She has also had six bodies of work awards from such diverse groups as the Catholic Library Assn., the University of Minnesota and Keene State College, the Oklahoma Libraries, the Boston Public Library, and the New England Science Fiction Assn.

A must for bedtime,

My daughter, who is now almost 8 years old, has been listening to this CD before bed every night since I got it 2 years ago. For a while we had to start at track/story #4 because she had never heard the end. Jane Yolen is fabulous and she reads the stories herself. A Must Have for bedtime!
