Book Description

A unique blend of chess, humour and imagination.
A collection of chess puzzles and stories to improve your game, to provoke, to entertain and to raise a chuckle.
There is nothing quite like it in the whole of chess literature.
The stories turn the puzzles into flights of fantasy where pawns and chess pieces come to life and the chess board becomes the stage for a fantastic drama.
Where else can you learn chess tactics from a story about the colour of a librarian’s underwear?

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvelous book from a fine author September 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A marvelous book from a fine author blessed with great phantasy and esprit. I liked already his witty comments on chessgames.com on the daily puzzles, The book contains some forty puzzles, taken mostly from chessgames.com, orders them according to difficulty, and writes imagined stories around them, which prove real literary talent.
You may try your tactical alertness in solving the puzzles, and compare your solutions to the thorough explanations of the author. Then You begin to enjoy the stories which reveal great imagination. The book containes also a personal tribute to Bent Larsen, one of the greatest chess players. He likes Larsen because of his style, being "a free thinker, a wild spirit, a risk taker", one who "played with a smile, a sense of humour, a pinch of fun." These are exactly the features that also characterises the author.
With a few exceptions, after some pondering I could find the right solutions to the puzzles, but this is not the major thing that makes the book enjoyable. It is first of all the life wisdom and the love of chess that shines through the little stories. If You love and appreciate literature related to chess, this is the best choice for You to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most original chess books ever written February 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
At Chessgames.com, Will Once would regale fellow posters with wonderful whimsical essays about the daily puzzle. There'd even occasionally be some tactical or strategic insight in the stories, which would talk about librarians, vampyres, the defeated white wooden pieces in a box overhearing their victorious enemies song of victory... Little 3-4-page parables that would transport us from the alternate universe of chess to Once's alternate universe of whimsy (the Will world), and we'd come to the punch line at the end, abruptly wormholing our way back to our little Chess.

Will's stories are so good that a number of us, including me, would lobby him to publish a collection. Well, he did and I'm glad. The first Kindle book I have ever bought. Well, I have to get back to the Real world now.

Thanks Will!

5.0 out of 5 stars delightfully penned, humorous and at times anecdotal February 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A rare treat for chess enthusiasts, comprising selected games at master level, in each a puzzle position presented for those who like to exercise their chess brains, and to go with each a delightfully penned, humorous and at times anecdotal digression, a sort of "the story within the story." This e-book has all the originality and freshness of the true enthusiast. Once Upon a Chess Game will probably be read mostly by those who like the game of chess but it could be enjoyable also for non-players.

More About the Author

Laughter in a crazy world.

I am Will Once and I play with words. By day I wonder why the 9 to 5 has turned into the 8 to 6. By night and at the weekends, I tell stories where your normal expectations are turned on their head, where heroes become villains and the most unlikely of characters can save the world.

My first book is "Love, death and tea". It is your everyday story of what the apocalypse might feel like from the zombie's perspective.

Right now I'm working on my second book - "Global domination for beginners". It's a self-help guide on how to rule the world - an antidote to James Bond.

You can find me on chessgames.com as "Once". I am usually writing strange tales about chess, life and love, and not taking anything too seriously.

As to the biographical details, I'm 49, living in England, married, with one son, aka the best boy in the world (disclaimer: other best boys in the world are also available).
