4.0 out of 5 stars Cinderella: Bluesy Hair Metal
Take the bluesy swagger of Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones, add a guitar sound similar to AC/DC's, throw in the sleaze metal of Motley Crue and pour it into a bag, shake it up and you get bluesy hair metal band Cinderella. The recipe works.

Some highlights on this wonderful "best of" collection include:

The material here is all 5 star, but it's missing too many essential songs for me to rate the album as a whole a 5. "Night Songs" and "Push Push" from the debut and "Fallin' Apart At The Seams" and "Long Cold Winter" from their second album are missing here. Also, there's only 1 song from the underrated Still Climbing. However, the songs from Heartbreak Station are well chosen and the inclusion of "Move Over" (from the charity album Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell), "Hot & Bothered" (from Wayne's World), and a new song "War Stories" are very good. If you're new to Cinderella this is definitely the place to start. If you're a casual fan, it's probably all you'll need. Also check out the Live cd. Cinderella are one of the best live bands I've ever seen and the song selection is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cinderella: Bluesy Hair Metal, June 6, 2000

Some highlights on this wonderful "best of" collection include:

"Shake Me" - This song is very AC/DC-ish in style, nothing complicated on the guitar here, just a good, hard rocker. "Nobody's Fool" - "Nobody's Fool" really shows Cinderella's range as musicians. This is an excellent Def Leppard-like ballad. "Gypsy Road" - This is a swaggering rocker, sounding maybe a bit like Aerosmith and Motley Crue at times. Great song, maybe Cinderella's best. "Coming Home" - Cinderella at their best. This is an excellent ballad played with an acoustic guitar and may be my favorite Cinderella song. Very emotional and very moving.

This is one of the better compilation albums I've heard and, unlike many so-called "best of" albums, Once Upon A... is pretty much complete. Every song that should be on it is on it. So, if you are a casual Cinderella fan (like me), Once Upon A... is probably what you are looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars RECOMMENDED!!!, February 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Once Upon A... (Audio CD)
This is a great album to have and it gives all of their best songs from the previous albums. The best would be, "Nobody's Fool, Coming Home, The Last Mile, Heartbreak Station, Somebody Save Me, Shelter Me, Through the Rain and the awesome ballad, Don't Know What You've Got (till it's gone). Definitely bang for your buck here folks...and check out Cinderella on TOUR WITH POISON THIS SUMMER! Leave the doom and gloom 90s behind...IT'S TIME TO ROCK AGAIN!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Blue Hair Band of the 80's(No, Really!), February 10, 2004
This review is from: Once Upon A... (Audio CD)
"Cinderella" is usually laughed off as "one of those silly, talentless hairbands" of the 80's. Don't count them out just yet. Sure, they didn't have as much success as Bon Jovi or Def Leppard, but Cinderella stuck out when other bands were trying to all sound alike. They might have gotten a little too bluesy for mainstream hairband fans near the end, but "Heartbreak Station" gave these guys some credit as a legitimate rock n' roll band. Besides, Led Zeppelin, who was looked upon as gods in the heyday of hair, are also considered a blues act.

Anyway, this album is a nice addition to anyone's 80's rocker collection. "Shake Me," "Nobody's Fool" and "Shelter Me" are all here. So is "Don't Know What You Got(Till It's Gone)" and a whole plethora of Cinderella hits.

They never dominated the charts, but Cinderella definitely left their mark on the 80's. Give this one a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars A "hair" above the rest., December 16, 2003

"Cinderella" always gets thrown in with the other hair bands, but truth be known, they're better than that. They have a brand of blues based metal that rocks more than one would expect. Some are annoyed by the singers voice, but I think it complements the music well. This disc also has a suprising number of hits, among them "Shake Me", "Nobody's Fool", and the excellent "Gypsy Road". Plus "Coming Home", "The Last Mile", and the huge ballad "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)". Every track on here is good, if not great. Overall, "Once Upon A..." may not be a perfect cd, but it's better than "The Millennium Collection".

3.0 out of 5 stars The Fairy Tale Is Finally Over, September 15, 2000

If you like Cinderella (big hair pop metal / rock), this one pretty much covers it for you. All the big hits for the band grace this album. Some folks don't care for Cinderella, but they're actually quite enjoyable to listen to, some rockers, some ballads and some pop-ish stuff thrown in the mix, as well. The raspy crooning goes over pretty good on most of their tunes and their guitar work is decent.

Cinderella made their debut in the MTV generation 80's and got some good airplay with Nobody's Fool and Shake Me. Somebody Save Me followed on the same album. Their second release brought Gypsy Road, Don't Know What You've Got and Coming Home - all very good songs. Later on, Cinderella started to "peter" out and only had a few good ones through the late 80's: Through The Rain, Hot and Bothered and The More Things Change.

I doubt we'll see much (at least worthwhile) stuff out of Cinderella - their fairy tale is finally over. However, if you want a compilation CD from a decent pop metal band like these guys put together with Cinderella, this is the one to pick up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only way to hear Cinderella, June 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Once Upon A... (Audio CD)
Cinderella, like many other late '80's hair bands, have this problem with solid albums. You have those one or two big hits and the rest of the album leaves you high and dry!! This "best of" brings all the must have singles onto one CD. Early classics like "Shake Me", "Nobody's Fool", "Gypsy Road", "Don't Know What You Got", and my favorite "Somebody Save Me!!" 15 tracks in all that make you want to rock!!

4.0 out of 5 stars As complete as compilations get, April 25, 2001
This review is from: Once Upon A... (Audio CD)
Cinderella's Once Upon A.... is your complete greatest hits type of compilation. For a group that was considered at first, a Bon Jovi clone, then later 'just another glam hair band' they have some songs that stick with people. There are the hard pop driving types of songs like Shake Me, the power ballads like Nobody's Fool. And what is probably unique about Cinderella's sound that few other bands at least at that stage were doing was showing how heavy of a blues influence they had in their music. From the lyrics to some of the piano play on some of their tracks, this band was heavily influenced by blues music. Their tenure in rock was cut short temporarily when lead singer/composer Tom Kiefer suffered vocal cord issues, but now he has recovered from them, led the group on a successful comeback tour...and they are in the studio working on their first new project in over 6 years. For those of us from the 80s and remembering that carefree time fondly, this CD is a good pick up for if nothing less than as a reminder of that time. Good music never dies, no matter what becomes popular, and that defines this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough overview, January 3, 2001
This review is from: Once Upon A... (Audio CD)
While I prefer the cover art of Heartbreak Station, you cannot fault the selection of tunes on this collection. Cinderella was just one of the dozen hair bands that graced the air waves lo those many years ago, but they certainly were one of the better hair bands. If you want to hear some good power ballads, this CD is a great place to start.
