Book Description

"The elements that make Baker's first two entries in this series so delightful are in full force here. Rich in details . . . irresistible and loaded with humor. [A] brilliantly created world of magic and mayhem."-VOYA

"The characters are likable, the dialogue is snappy, and the story is warmhearted and appealing . . . Emma's third adventure invites readers on a vacation to a good-natured, generous-hearted imaginary land."-The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 - Princess Emma is anxious to marry Eadric, but first she must undo the family curse that threatens to turn her into an evil hag after her upcoming 16th birthday. Using the magical powers she is still learning to control, she visits the long-ago era when the spell was cast in an attempt to discover how it can be broken. Readers who enjoyed Baker's The Frog Princess and Dragon's Breath are the likeliest audience for this addition to the series as it seems to exist primarily to tie up loose ends. Even in this regard, though, it is disappointing. So much of the text is devoted to recapping the plots of the first two titles that there is not much room for a new story and the pace of this book is slowed considerably: " 'I'll put the spell in a ball like the ones we used when we fought King Beltran and turned his soldiers into frogs and mice,'" Emma calls to Eadric in the thick of battle. With such roundabout descriptions of the action, it's difficult to keep one's attention focused on the confrontation at hand. This title is necessary only in collections where the first two books are popular. - Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Baker does it again June 18, 2005
Format:Hardcover
I am more impressed each time I read this author. The tone is appropriately light for a semi-satiric fantasy without becoming too cutesy/silly. The characters are a delight, and the ending was both touching and hilarious. Highly recommended!

A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
I loved this book it was my favorite out of the three. If you have read the first two you will love this one.it is about when Emma goes back in time and tries to break the family curse and goes back home with this knowlege.Thinking she is about to end the family curse she has to go through alot more then she expected.

I would recomend this book pre-teen and teens in their early teen years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such A Good Book!!! April 22, 2008
Format:Hardcover
Once Upon A Curse is a book that every book lover should read (after you've read The Frog Princess and Dragon's Breath of course)... It has time travel, fairys, dragons, harpies, and other magical creatures too. Captivating with kind and snotty ancestors that Princess Emma meets when she's trying to solve the family curse's mysteries... along with Eadric, Lil, and some magic she's bound for a journey no one's gone on before!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect September 9, 2006
By M. R.
Format:Paperback
I can't get enough of Emma and Eadric, and I'm almost dissapointed that it'll be another 48 hours before I can get to a bookstore to buy the fourth book.

You could say this book is more of the same things from the other two, but it's still amazingly successful. Eadric is charming and exasperating (like most teenage boys), Emma is wise but clumsy (like most teenage girls), and everyone is just so well done and out of the ordinary. This series turns fairy tales on their head in a perfect way.

An absolute must read for anybody that likes fairy tales, at any age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story. Lots of typos.
First of all, this is not a prequel. It's a sequel (i.e., it follows the Frog Princess and Dragon's Breath - it doesn't precede them). Read more
