Book Description

8 and up3 and upTales of the Frog Princess
Many years ago a slighted fairy placed a curse on a beautiful young princess-a curse that caused her and all her female descendants to turn into mean, ugly witches if they ever touched a flower after turning sixteen. Now, Princess Emma, who is about to turn sixteen herself, is determined to break the spell once and for all. Emma travels back in time to the day the curse was placed on her ancestor in the hope of preventing the curse from being cast. Unfortunately she isn't successful in her efforts, but she does learn how to break it. Armed with this knowledge, Emma returns to her own time full of hope. But disaster ensues and Emma is about to give up completely-until true love shows itself in the most unexpected place of all.

With a bit of courage, a pinch of luck, and of course, a healthy dose of magic, Princess Emma charms her way through the third hilarious adventure in the Tales of the Frog Princess series.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 - Princess Emma is anxious to marry Eadric, but first she must undo the family curse that threatens to turn her into an evil hag after her upcoming 16th birthday. Using the magical powers she is still learning to control, she visits the long-ago era when the spell was cast in an attempt to discover how it can be broken. Readers who enjoyed Baker's The Frog Princess and Dragon's Breath are the likeliest audience for this addition to the series as it seems to exist primarily to tie up loose ends. Even in this regard, though, it is disappointing. So much of the text is devoted to recapping the plots of the first two titles that there is not much room for a new story and the pace of this book is slowed considerably: " 'I'll put the spell in a ball like the ones we used when we fought King Beltran and turned his soldiers into frogs and mice,'" Emma calls to Eadric in the thick of battle. With such roundabout descriptions of the action, it's difficult to keep one's attention focused on the confrontation at hand. This title is necessary only in collections where the first two books are popular. - Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Baker does it again, June 18, 2005
This review is from: Once Upon A Curse (Tales of the Frog Princess) (Hardcover)
I am more impressed each time I read this author. The tone is appropriately light for a semi-satiric fantasy without becoming too cutesy/silly. The characters are a delight, and the ending was both touching and hilarious. Highly recommended!
