Book Description

June 1, 2004
Stories from Gemany's Rhine valley, Switzerland's cantons, and France's Alsace all play a part in shaping the lore of America's most enduring ethnic minority: the Pennsylvania Germans. Dennis Boyer, a folk tale collector, starts with those roots in Europe and then takes us on a field trip in the American places influence by the people known as the Pennsylvania Dutch. The book reveals the ghosts and spirits that are part of this almost forgotten culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tales of supernatural terror, December 13, 2004
This review is from: Once Upon a Hex (Paperback)
Once Upon A Hex: A Spiritual Ecology Of The Pennsylvania Germans is an anthology of folklore combining ghost stories from Germany's Rhine valley, Switzerland's pastoral cantons, and France's Alsace, as tales from these and more places can be found among the Pennsylvania Germans, also popularly known as the "Pennsylvania Dutch." Tales of supernatural terror, hauntings, revenge of the dead upon the living and more make for spooky and captivating reading, sure to keep one awake late at night! An engaging collection that is sure to prompt the reader to wonder how much of the mystical elements stem from the imagination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, easy read ...., June 16, 2007

This review is from: Once Upon a Hex (Paperback)
Being from "PA Dutch County" I find these superstitions and traditions fascinating and intriguing (and some are still continued).
The only thing I found slightly bothersome about this book was entire passages written in with strong Dutch accents--I understand that is how the person talked in "real life" but it was very hard to read and bothersome to "decipher"--esp. when it went on for paragraphs. But, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone--worth the money!
