Book Description

Megan McNabb would do anything to get out of marrying a man she does not love—even handfasting for a year and a day with an English stranger.

A mysterious letter draws Lord Kit Rossington to Scotland in search of a lost treasure. But the marriage-minded females he avoided in England follow him to the Highlands, and he'll do anything—even a temporary marriage with a Highland lass—to keep his freedom while he solves a mystery that's haunted Glen Dorian for almost a century.

Legends say a curse lurks among the shattered stones of Glen Dorian Castle. Will the love that is beginning to grow between Megan and Kit be able to withstand fate? For only the living, those with bold hearts and true love, can restore peace to Glen Dorian at last.

3.0 out of 5 stars Potential Unrealized~ July 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This review of Once Upon a Highland Autumn is the same review I wrote for Once Upon a Highland Summer because my thoughts about them is exactly the same. Once Upon a Highland Autumn and the prequel Once Upon a Highland Summer were both good tales. The reason I rated both of them a three is because Lecia Cornwall painted both of her lead men as weak willed, and who were intimidated by their counterparts. I had to struggle to like these men, neither one of them seemed to know their own mind. The leading women were strong but not overpowering so there was no need for the men to be such wimps. As I grew up with six manly brothers, and watched my sister endure marriage to a man who had no spine, perhaps I am pre-dispositioned to like strong, capable men.
I do not know if I would purchase another of Cornwall's books because I see the beginning of a pattern in these two tales which could prove fatal if she persists with this characterization of her heroes. If I have to struggle to like the men who are paired with lovely, sweet and pleasing women it nearly ruins the story for me no matter how great the potential, and there is potential! I would certainly enjoy books 3 & 4 should she decide to finish the family, and should she not neuter her heroes~

The synopsis provides a good background for this tale, and those who enjoy romantic fairy tales may well enjoy this story. Reviews indicate that there are several who did. But I had problems with it.

1. The earl is invited to dinner where he will meet the dowager countess and her daughters. Immediately upon introduction he's pounced on by the countess who proposes marriage to her daughter, Megan. No. Not even Mrs. Bliss is this outrageous.

2. His answer? A "horrified No!" I say no to that. Any nobleman who's traveled the ballrooms of London may think No! but will be adept at smoothly extricating himself from the situation.

3. Handfasting. In the 19th Century? Between nobility? Absolutely no. There may have been occasional instances of this happening in rural areas of Scotland during this time period, but not in this milieu. I knew about this handfasting when I began reading and I was intrigued, thinking there may be some unusual plot twist that would adequately explain it. But no, it's the same old handfasting and it just doesn't fly.

4. The first three were so contrived.

I've laid out the issues that bothered me about this story and which largely kept me from enjoying it. A reader who doesn't see these as problems may well enjoy the tale. As I said, it's fanciful.

Enjoy your reading! :)

I liked Once Upon an Autumn. The characters are appealing and the plot interesting. This tale started off a bit slowly at first but within a few chapters the pace picks up and I was engrossed in the story. This Highland tale is about a castle and a curse and a harried Englishman and a fierce Scottish lass.

Kit is an English Earl with a very overpowering family who overtake his home and he has a mother who is constantly trying to get him married. He hightails it to one of his other estates and discovers a mysterious letter in his deceased great uncle’s belongings. Seems that his uncle was a Colonel and while he was stationed in Scotland, he helped out a Scottish lord and his family. Kit discovers in the letter that a castle in Scotland holds a treasure. This mightily intrigues Kit and he decides to find the castle and the treasure.

Megan is an Earl’s daughter and she has a secret, she is in love with a village boy who is abroad finding his fortune. Her mother expects her to make a great catch though and when they visit her aunt Megan discovers castle ruins and its sad history.

Megan and Kit’s first meeting goes terribly thanks to her mother. The two leads have an instant dislike for each other. Fortunately they are not constantly trading barbs. Away from her mother, Megan literally lets her hair down and slowly Kit finds himself somewhat enchanted with earthy funny Megan.

The two both have an interest in the castle ruins but for different reasons. Kit is looking for a treasure and Megan loves to learn the tales of the highland and the castle’s history just keeps drawing her and Kit to its ruins. Both leads have no desire to marry for a while (Megan is waiting for her village boy to return) but fate seems to keeps pulling them together. The two find romance in spite of themselves. They are both kind and both are trying very hard to keep their feelings in check but the reader can see that they are each other’s destiny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Highland Autumn October 2, 2014

Once Upon a Highland Autumn by Lecia Cornwall is a Scottish Historical Romance set in the early 19th Century. Megan McNabb would do anything to get out of marrying a man she does not love even hand fasting for a year and a day with an English stranger.
A mysterious letter draws Lord Kit Rossington to Scotland in search of a lost treasure. But the marriage-minded females he avoided in England follow him to the Highlands, and he'll do anything even a temporary marriage with a Highland lass to keep his freedom while he solves a mystery that's haunted Glen Dorian for almost a century. Legends say a curse lurks among the shattered stones of Glen Dorian Castle. Will the love that is beginning to grow between Megan and Kit be able to withstand fate? For only the living, those with bold hearts and true love, can restore peace to Glen Dorian at last. This is the first book I’ve read by Lecia Cornwall and was able to purchase it from Amazon Kindle for $1.99. It’s a sweet love story with a lot of Scottish history. I plan to buy the novel before this one, “Once Upon a Highland Summer” about Megan’s brother and the 3rd story coming out in December, “Once Upon a Highland Christmas.”
