Book Description

Iconic fairy-tale characters from storybooks, movies, and television inspire this collection of magical knitting patterns perfect for modern knights, villains, and princesses.

Once again, Genevieve Miller taps a wide range of contributors (from knitwear designers to students) to create a collection of 28 wearables, accessories, and toys that can be knit for adults or kids. Inspired by the recent resurgence of fairy-tale and fantasy characters, these projects draw from classic stories as well as pop-culture phenomena featuring romantic, feminine costumes. Projects range from kid- and teen-friendly animals hats to an Alice in Wonderland beret to a crystal-embellished vest fit for a Snow Queen, adding a little dress-up fun to knitters' everyday wardrobes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unimaginative June 30, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Don't get taken in by the cover photo. The "Ruby Red Riding Hood" cloak is the only clever pattern out of the 28 in this book. None of the others shows much imagination. The "Modern Chain Mail Hoodie" is just a basic garter stitch hoodie with a cable pattern up the sleeves. There are patterns for some handbags ("Little Red's Basket" & a "Yellow Brick Road" bag are virtually identical except for the colorways, & a "Pumpkin Carriage" requires you to get out your sewing machine for the lining); a couple of pairs of socks; a bunch of shrugs & "shawlettes," similar patterns for which can be had free on numerous knitting websites, & some silly hats that you can make to humiliate your children. (The "Woodland Friends Hats" show zero imagination - a much better source is Vanessa Mooncie's delightful "Animal Hats" - & the "Proper Princess Topper" looks like an old-fashioned dunce cap.) Even the photography is disappointing. The little girl in the "Princess Topper" looks just as unhappy wearing that hat as I would be. Whoever knitted the man's "Charming Cardigan" apparently couldn't be bothered to adjust the tension on their sewing machine when they installed the zipper (it doesn't sit flat, but ripples in & out) & the pattern is unattractive, to say the least - the contrasting trim on the collar & down the front is okay, but the line of contrasting cable stitches that go halfway up either side of the front just looks weird. I give this 2 stars instead of 1 only b/c I like the Red Riding Hood & a couple of others - there's a cute dragon toy, a nice fingerless mitt pattern embellished with pretty little rosettes, & a sweet little girl's ruffled skirt (for which you'll need a special "self-ruffling" yarn, however). All in all, disappointing & not worth the $$.

3.0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Knit July 9, 2014
Format:Paperback
I liked the Yellow Brick Road Bag and the Cinderella bag with the pumpkin coach purse, but most of the projects in this book could have appeared in any collection of knitting patterns. Nothing but their titles and descriptions scream "fairy tale." Some of the lace and cabled projects have charts, but many don't. Unfortunately, the ones I would have considered knitting don't. There are quite a few shrugs and capelets. I'd suggest looking through the selection of patterns, either in person or online, before purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed :) February 26, 2014

I ran across this book on Amazon, and bought it based on the cover. I have been looking for a hooded cape like this. I was happy to see that I loved so many other projects in this book. I am very happy with my purchase.

When I checked this book out from the library my kids kept bugging me to make so many of the patterns that I went ahead and bought the book. I have made the dragon toy from the book and it was a nightmare. I lost count of the number of errors in the pattern and question if anyone bothered to check this pattern for accuracy. Thankfully I knew enough about knitting to figure out how to fix the mistakes and my son will get his dragon for Christmas but is was absolutely no fun making. I have been unable to find any pattern corrections anywhere. The one thing that might redeem this book is that it is a compilation of patterns from many designers, so I have hopes that the patterns from the other designers will not be so riddled with mistakes.

I really like many of the patterns in this quirky book. But, I'm having difficulty following the instructions for the Snow White Shrug. I'm not sure if the instructions are wrong or just written in a confusing way. Unfortunately, none of the patterns have the dimensions the finished garments are intended to have as part of the description so it is more difficult to interpret the instructions than in most knitting books. So far, I haven't been able to find any errata for this book.

This is the only design from the book that I've attempted to actually knit so I'm hoping my difficulties are just with this one pattern!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait For Another One! February 17, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had bought Genevieve Millers Vampire Knits a while back and I fell in love with every aspect of the book; all of the great patterns and photos! This book, Once Upon a Knit, just like the previous one has been beautifully put together. With that alone, I can just sit and look at the book all day. ;) I have not started any patterns from this book yet, but from the previous book, I can say it was easy to follow the directions from the projects I did attempt.

Romantic and beautiful. I can't wait to knit up several of these. My kids are in love with fairy tales still, even though they are older, and they oohed and ahhed.
