I'm going to cry and whine about it, April 2, 2008
This review is from: Once Upon A Pregnancy (Silhouette Special Edition) (Mass Market Paperback)
Simone got knocked up one night, she has emotional scars and she never wanted kids. She slept with a paramedic one night and now she's going to have a baby. I'm 93 pages into this book and I can tell you right now that I HATE the main character with a passion so far.
The author has made it so it's not possible to like the character. She's whined throughout the whole book so far. She never thinks about telling the father about the baby. She never thinks about his feelings. She never looks at the bright side of anything. She pushes Mike away. She complains about the dog she's watching. She doesn't get close to anyone. She wants to give her baby up for adoption, but she doesn't seem to think that she should involve the father into any of this even though he seems to really want a kid.
She thinks things like "I hope that Mike can see that this is the best choice for the baby." "I have a strong feeling that he's going to be happy about the baby." "Maybe I might not feel right about giving the baby up for adoption but it's for the best."
You have yet to find out what her issues are and it's annoying. These issues are the reasons for why I hate her so much. I would love to be able to feel sorry for her long enough to get through the book.
Her mother might have cancer and she's pisses because her mother didn't tell her. Which on the one hand I can understand but it seems like she's refusing to acknowledge that maybe her mother didn't know how to tell her only daughter that she was sick.
I cannot wait to be done with this book.

It was a cute and interesting little book. Nice way to relax at night after taking care of two little ones all day.

Cute story, but very unrealistic, like most women's fiction., November 6, 2009
This review is from: Once Upon A Pregnancy (Silhouette Special Edition) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a typical women's feel-good book about a nurse faced with an unplanned pregnancy. As is typical in these types of romance novels, it is always the woman who is commitment and baby-shy, while the guy is love struck and in awe of the heroine's "strength." I guess that is why these books sell, and I must admit, I enjoy them. I just wish, for once, these books would reflect reality, and that they would make a book that is feel-goodish, but also shows women moving on after being abandonded. I have a feeling more women today face abandonment after pregnancy than a guy begging for marriage after a brief sexual encounter, but the point of women's romance is pure escapism. I have read other lovey-type books that show men's more natural reluctance to commit, and they manage to pull off happy endings just the same (which is why we girls like these books). I just hope women dont confuse these fictitious stories with the reality of the way many men often act when faced with unplanned kids (especially after one-night stands and brief sexual encounters. These books have the same effect on women as porn has on porn. Enjoy this book ladies, but dont get deluded by fiction.
