Book Description

March 15, 2008

A patchwork as rich with history as any well-worn quilt, this now-classic anthology collects the stories so many quilts tell--tales of making do and creating beauty out of scraps, stories of starting anew and passing down a legacy stitched with the lore of ages. Bringing together anecdotes, essays, and memoirs about quilts, quilting, and quilt history, the book has something for everyone who ever pieced a quilt together or admired a quilters handiwork.

Ranging from the amusing to the poignant to the enlightening, the selections include historical meditations from quilting authority Merikay Waldvogel and best-selling author Sandra Dallas; hilarious pieces on quilting obsessions from humorists Ami Simms and Lisa Boyer; and a charming essay about passing on quilting knowledge from Quilters Newsletter columnist Helen Kelley.

Illustrated with a glorious collection of quilting photographs and paintings, vintage advertising and pattern booklets, this book is the quintessential quilters companion.

From the Back Cover

Past and present come together in Once Upon a Quilt, a scrapbook of stories, essays, and memories that celebrates quilts and quilting heritage.

The stories gathered here reflect the cultural and historical aspects of quilts; set during the turn of the twentieth century to the modern day, they range from the amusing to the informative to the enlightening. Contributors include Sandra Dallas, Ami Simms, Helen Kelley, Merikay Waldvogel, Shelly Zegart, and many more.

These pieces work in perfect tandem with an eye-catching treasury of artwork, which includes color photographs, black-and-white historical photographs, vintage advertising, pattern booklets, and paintings from such acclaimed artists as Diane Phalen, Rebecca Barker, and Warren Kimble.

Whether you’re a quilter or someone who has a love of quilts and what they represent, this anthology of classic and contemporary reflections on the patchwork passion will warm your heart and inspire you to reflect upon your own quilting stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a lovely book, May 20, 2011

My children asked to teach them to quilt and by chance we picked up this book with the rest of the quilting books from the library. What an awesome way to showcase history woven into quilting stories. We read a story every evening at bedtime and my 6 year old boys loved them. There are funny and sad stories but all of them are beautiful. If one never quilted this sure will make them want to try.
