Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K Two children build a boat, picnic, find a treasure map and sail to a pirates' island. They get chased by pirates and saved by a whale, and end up back at their beach. Once there, they decide to build a home out of the boat and stay forever. The simple rhyming text is illustrated with cheerful cartoons predominated by sea green and blue watercolor washes the whole effectively conjuring up seaside memories. There are plenty of picture books on the beach and ocean, etc., and this one is not unique, but it has a nice feel about it. A satisfying imaginative adventure, perfect for summer storytimes. 3.0 out of 5 stars Where did all those kids come from?, September 15, 2006
This review is from: Once Upon a Tide (Hardcover)
I agree with the reviewers who say this book is appealing and whimsical and that it serves as a great summer read. The illustrations are appropriate and convey warmth and the verse is sweet. But when you turn to the last page and it shows that two children (a boy and a girl) are on this deserted island by themselves and there are suddenly 6 (even littler) children with them, it does serve to confuse the adult reader. Where did these littler children come from? Are the older children their parents? Hardly. I'm sure we would get asked this question by SOME child if we use the book in story time.
