5.0 out of 5 stars Who loves it more-- the adult or child?
We bought this book for my daughter when she was 4 and heavily into the world of princesses (especially Snow White) and fantasy. She had the book for months before she ventured off the Snow White page. There is so much to do and see with this book, and it can be easily adapted for multiple ages. 3.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Treasure
I stumbled on this accidentally and thought it looked rather neat. I could imagine it a great way to help teach kids map skills. It is 6 maps of fairy tale lands, each map has a set of directions to find a treasure at the end. The format of the book is a bit problematic as the illustrations are rather small, making the directions harder to follow and the spine creates a...

We bought this book for my daughter when she was 4 and heavily into the world of princesses (especially Snow White) and fantasy. She had the book for months before she ventured off the Snow White page. There is so much to do and see with this book, and it can be easily adapted for multiple ages. This book is an especially good companion to reading some of these classics for the first time (Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and others). While the older child will memorize the maps and whiz through the hidden pictures rather quickly, all kids will enjoy the creative process of studying the map and imagining what else happens. We have fun asking questions about where other scenes from these books could happen on the map and making our own maps from there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!!, February 6, 2005
This review is from: The Once Upon a Time Map Book (Hardcover)
I hope the author writes a follow up to this book because my 4 year old, my husband and I are enchanted by the concept. We have taught her how to use the legend and how to find things using the letters and numbers. There are only six maps, but there are plenty of little, wonderful details on each page. Buy this book, it's wonderful fun and a wonderful learning tool.

My son is currently 6 and we had a blast reading this book. He loves playing pirates and he loves pretending to use a treasure map so this book was right up his alley. It requires adult interaction - which is great! Together we worked our way through this book. I'd see him still looking at all the details of each map long after I'd said goodnight. I wish there were more books of this nature that are appropriate for early elementary school-aged kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book especially for teachers to use, July 18, 1999
By
I found this book wonderful to use for teaching third grade map skills even if just used as a read aloud. Follow-up activities could easily be implemented from this book. The only thing to be warned about is that in the Peter Pan map, the Native Americans are called "Indians", but then again thats from Peter Pan. But I fell in love with the book for its content and purpose.

I stumbled on this accidentally and thought it looked rather neat. I could imagine it a great way to help teach kids map skills. It is 6 maps of fairy tale lands, each map has a set of directions to find a treasure at the end. The format of the book is a bit problematic as the illustrations are rather small, making the directions harder to follow and the spine creates a problem when measuring distances on the map, as it is right in the middle of said maps. All in all a very neat idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have as much fun with it as my daughter!, October 10, 2007

This book is great, it really brings life to the fairy tales like Snow White and even Peter Pan with big colorful maps of everything you read about in the stories. We have a lot of fun going over the map, and I really think for a youngster 4-7 or so it is perfect for their age and imagination. It really puts a picture to the story, and makes the fairy tales all the more real.

The maps are very colorful and vibrant, and really took some imagination and time to put together. There are a lot of fun things packed in, I really enjoy it as much as my daughter. Haven't reviewed many things but HAD to write one for this because every parent needs this on the bookshelf.

I've been helping in a 5th grade Social Studies class and we've been working on geography. North, south, east and west, is confusing. This really helped, especially the grid format. I read the story first and then we used the maps. So fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, November 23, 2009
This review is from: The Once Upon a Time Map Book (Hardcover)
Although there are only six enchanted lands in this book, they are wonderfully presented. Each enchanted land is jam packed with pictured information. The sidebars give you points of interest as well as danger points. This is a fun way to teach your child map reading basics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for map skills - and imagination, October 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an instant favorite for children and adults. The maps are so colorful and detailed; this book is a visual feast! The different lands are fun to investigate, especially if your child is familiar with the story behind each map. Explore the worlds of Jack and the Beanstalk, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and Aladdin through maps. This is a book that can grow with a child. A preschooler would enjoy this book and as they get older, introduce them to more and more of the map concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book at Perfect Time, March 20, 2008
By
This was one of those books that we happened to introduce our daughter to at the perfect time. She is 5.5, loves fairy tales, and has recently been very interested in Peter Pan, and we are teaching her about maps. She loved the book right away! She loves to have an adult read her the directions while she moves her finger around on the map. She also loves finding interesting items/people in the busy map pictures (think "Where's Waldo"). From an educational standpoint, with this book she was able to quickly understand how to use coordinate grids, keys, scale, cardinal and ordinal directions, and geographical vocabulary, all without the book being overtly didactic. Rather, it was just a fun story she could be a part of (and learning these things was an inherent by-product). I would guess most 4-8 year olds, but especially those who like fairy tale and pretend play, will enjoy this.
