once upon a time..., February 16, 2009
This review is from: Once Upon a Time (Audio CD)
it was perhaps the peak (peek?) of industrial culture interest, and a rather unusual concert at the lyceum in early 1981. boyd rice, z'ev, cabaret voltaire and throbbing gristle gathered for a display of what would later become to seekers of slightly strange and extremely original music, the first, and likely the most honest incarnation of industrial sound.
this album captures the headlining performance of throbbing gristle alone, a band who broke most every expectation of "band" as commercial entity.
while this release will be of interest to most for its historical value, it is not at all of poor recording quality, and shows the group in most interesting form. there seems to be a bit of magic in the air, especially for the first half with an eerie tension seemingly condensed in manipulated electronic sound. it progresses from a slightly contemplative sound, reserved, but awakening, exploring, peering around, and finally unfolding into something of evident structure and enveloping energy.
for fans, this gives an opportunity to see tg from an outside perspective, as a lyceum attendee hearing something quite different for the first time. and if 'discipline' is your favorite song, the 20 minute side two may have you doing push ups.
