Biography

Jake Smith's “White Buffalo” conjures a mythic portrait of America. A country populated by outlaws, dreamers, drifters and fallen heroes. It imagines our small towns before the days of strip malls and chain restaurants. With a voice that seems to emanate from some ancient source, his dynamic performances range from a whisper to a scream. His herd boasts the talents of Matt ... Editorial Reviews

2012 release from singer/songwriter Jake Smith and his White Buffalo project. The songs on Once Upon A Time In The West are rooted in everyday struggles, on both epic and personal scales, with elements of Blues, Country & Western, Folk, and Classic Rock. The influences of story-tellers like Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, Elliot Smith, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Bad Religion shine through. The album ranges in themes from slices of life in the shadows to coming out of a battlefield to dark heroic fantasies.

I just throw this cd in and play it start to finish at least twice a week.

I really love the combination of folk, country, americana, rock, with some horns thrown in here and there.

Caught him playing at a bar in Santa Barbara a couple years back and have been a big fan ever since.

This is the second White Buffalo album that I have purchased. He has a gruff and melty voice that I think is wonderful - reminiscent of Eddie Vedder (especially on "I am the Light") but still distinct and special in its own way. I have been playing this album on repeat since I got it! I really love the combination of folk, country, americana, rock, with some horns thrown in here and there. The songs are by turns anthemic, lovely and sad, and ebullient. I saw his act live when he toured with Chadwick Stokes last year, and he has a lot of charisma and presence that is reflected even in the recording. More White Buffalo!

White Buffalo is a terrific artist and this is probably his best album. If you are deciding where to start, you cannot do better than with this set of songs. Top to bottom, it stands as one of the best albums of American music ever recorded. This is heartfelt, real music that provides a warm cross-section of the American west, both old and modern. If you like hard rock, Southern rock, alternative country, or folk Americana, then you should love White Buffalo and find several very enjoyable tunes here. Taken together, they are more than the sum.

Once in awhile, I come across music that I know is of very high quality, but I don't really like listening to it. Then there's the "guilty pleasure" type music which sounds great or hooks you, even though you know it's crud (at least musically). That pretty well describes plenty of the junk on the charts these days, which pales in comparison. Somehow, White Buffalo fires on all cylinders, so you can have your cake and eat it, too. It's like eating cake with the nutritional goodness of kale.

Bear with me for a moment while I use another unlikely analogy. In baseball, a five-tool player is someone who can hit for average, hit for power, run fast, throw well, and play defense in the field. There are baseball players in the Hall of Fame who only were able to do two of those things really well. If a good singer-songwriter is measured by similar elements, then we would have skills like songwriting, vocals, melody, music, etc. I can't even think of five, but you get the picture. Now based on White Buffalo's songwriting and storytelling alone, we have a winner here. These are complex, passionate, story lines that ring with timeless simplicity and capture snapshots at the heart of America.

If you are familiar with White Buffalo's work, just buy this album and enjoy. It's another great release, as I expected. I'm not the best at identifying specific genres, but if you like folk or alt. country you will enjoy this album along with all his others.

let me preface this review by stating that I am a huge fan of his vocal style. He has a fantastic vibrato when he sings and it adds a real depth to his voice. His music is catch and the lyrics are relatible. This album has a country esc. quality to it. It also has a great rock vibe which spans the album. Overall, a very solid artist. The only reason i gave it a 4/5 is because this album is more country-influenced than his other full length (which is absolutely outstanding and i highly recommend) and i am not a fan of country music. it should be popular with not only classic/southern rock fans but also with indie and country fans alike. it really has something for everyone.

Never heard of White Buffalo until I heard them on a radio program and I loved them. After listening to some clips, I really liked this album and ordered it. Glad I did.

What a voice and what a chance to listen to this man. We in South Africa miss out on so many great singers and bands and i think that White Buffalo is one of the best ever. Wish i was born in the USA.

This follow up album to Hogtied Revisited has a different sound. A bit more country twang and a bit less folk, but still an absolutely solid album. I am personally not a big fan of country, but I absolutely love folk. This album was a bit of both, but is so well done that it cannot be overlooked. Buy it, enjoy it, go see them live! A killer live show as well.
