Describes recovery from a debilitating car accident in which the person is paralyzed. The book begins with a grandmother sitting by the hospital bed praying that her granddaughter will awaken from a coma and lead a normal life. It continues with the struggle of relearning to walk, talk, eat and persue daily living. "Once A Vegetable, Now A Ham" ends with the main chararacter getting married and receiving a masters degree.

About the Author
Upon recovery from a car accident in which I was involved, I initially did not have the funds to begin the rehabilitation to overcome severe handicaps. I could not speak and wore diapers again at 17 years old. Only through the community's help which raised more than one hundred thousand dollars to cover medical bills, can I again walk and speak as well as write this book. With that aid and my own determination, I have conquered obstacles that many would be afraid to overcome.

I found this book "Once a Vegetable, Now a Ham" very inspiring. The author certainly lived through a horrendous time & seems to have come thruough it beautifully. It's a "must read" for those in rehab & those who have loved ones going thru very difficult times.
